
Does Quitting Bread For 30 Days Trigger Weight Loss?

Here’s what’s going on, physiologically:
On the rise
In few words: cutting bread for 30 days can lead to weight loss for some people, but the initial change is often more a matter of reduced water retention and bloating rather than immediate fat loss. In particular, it’s common for people feel lighter within the first week or so because reducing fermentable carbohydrates can decrease gas production and resultant digestive discomfort, especially in those with sensitive guts.
On which note…
About wheat components and tolerance: certain compounds in wheat—such as gluten, lectins, and phytates—don’t affect everyone the same way, but in those whose physiologies don’t handle them well, repeated exposure contributes to low-grade inflammation and/or mineral absorption issues, all of which can trigger feelings of sluggishness.
Speaking of feelings, it’s worth noting that digestion of gluten can produce peptides that mildly interact with opioid receptors, so temporary cravings during the first 1–2 weeks is generally a matter of neurobiological adaptation.
However, there are some more things to consider, for example: bread is primarily starch that rapidly converts to glucose, triggering insulin release, which means that reducing frequent refined carbohydrate exposure (i.e. most bread) will typically lower fasting insulin and improve blood sugar stability over time.
This is relevant also to the weight loss issue, because when insulin spikes happen less often, your body can more easily switch between burning glucose and stored fat.
In short, a 30-day break from bread can function as a short-term self-experiment to observe changes in energy, digestion, cravings, and possibly weight, but long-term metabolic health depends much more on overall dietary patterns than on any single food.

Metformin Without Diabetes?
Metformin is a diabetes drug; it works by:
- decreasing glucose absorption from the gut
- decreasing glucose production in the liver
- increasing insulin sensitivity
It doesn’t change how much insulin is secreted, and is unlikely to cause hypoglycemia, making it relatively safe as diabetes drugs go.
It’s a biguanide drug, and/but so far as science knows (so far), its mechanism of action is unique (i.e. no other drug works the same way that metformin does).
Today we’ll examine its off-label uses and see what the science says!
A note on terms: “off-label” = when a drug is prescribed to treat something other than the main purpose(s) for which the drug was approved.
Other examples include modafinil against depression, and beta-blockers against anxiety.
Why take it if not diabetic?
There are many reasons people take it, including just general health and life extension:
However, its use was originally expanded (still “off-label”, but widely prescribed) past “just for diabetes” when it showed efficacy in treating pre-diabetes. Here for example is a longitudinal study that found metformin use performed similarly to lifestyle interventions (e.g. diet, exercise, etc). In their words:
❝ Lifestyle intervention or metformin significantly reduced diabetes development over 15 years. There were no overall differences in the aggregate microvascular outcome between treatment groups❞
But, it seems it does more, as this more recent review found:
❝Long-term weight loss was also seen in both [metformin and intensive lifestyle intervention] groups, with better maintenance under metformin.
Subgroup analyses from the DPP/DPPOS have shed important light on the actions of metformin, including a greater effect in women with prior gestational diabetes, and a reduction in coronary artery calcium in men that might suggest a cardioprotective effect.
Long-term diabetes prevention with metformin is feasible and is supported in influential guidelines for selected groups of subjects.❞

Cardioprotective effect
In short, another review (published a few months after the above one) confirmed the previous findings, and also added:
❝Patients with BMI > 35 showed an association between metformin use and lower incidence of CVD, including African Americans older than age 65. The data suggest that morbidly obese patients with prediabetes may benefit from the use of metformin as recommended by the ADA.❞

For weight loss
The short version is, it works:
- Effectiveness of metformin on weight loss in non-diabetic individuals with obesity
- Metformin for weight reduction in non-diabetic patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Metformin induces weight loss associated with gut microbiota alteration in non-diabetic obese women
…and many many more where those came from. As a point of interest, it has also been compared and contrasted to GLP-1 agonists.
Compared/contrasted with GLP-1 agonists
It’s not quite as effective for weight loss, and/but it’s a lot cheaper, is tablets rather than injections, has fewer side effects (for most people), and doesn’t result in dramatic yoyo-ing if there’s an interruption to taking it:

Is it safe?
For most people yes, but there are a stack of contraindications, so it’s best to speak with your doctor. However, particular things to be aware of include:
- Usually contraindicated if you have kidney problems of any kind
- Usually contraindicated if you have liver problems of any kind
- May be contraindicated if you have issues with B12 levels

❝There seems to be a lot of suggestions to take supplements for every thing, from your head to your toes. I know it’s up to the individual but what are the facts or stats to support taking them versus not?❞
Short answer:
- supplementary vitamins and minerals are probably neither needed nor beneficial for most (more on this later) people, with the exception of vitamin D which most people over a certain age need unless they are white and getting a lot of sun.
- other kinds of supplement can be very beneficial or useless, depending on what they are, of course, and also your own personal physiology.
With regard to vitamins and minerals, in most cases they should be covered by a healthy balanced diet, and the bioavailability is usually better from food anyway (bearing in mind, we say vitamin such-and-such, or name an elemental mineral, but there are usually multiple, often many, forms of each—and supplements will usually use whatever is cheapest to produce and most chemically stable).
However! It is also quite common for food to be grown in whatever way is cheapest and produces the greatest visible yield, rather than for micronutrient coverage.
This goes for most if not all plants, and it goes extra for animals (because of the greater costs and inefficiencies involved in rearing animals).

Do We Need Supplements, And Do They Work?
You may be wondering: what was that about “most (more on this later) people”?
Sometimes someone will have a nutrient deficiency that can’t be easily remedied with diet. Often this occurs when their body:
- has trouble absorbing that nutrient, or
- does something inconvenient with it that makes a lot of it unusable when it gets it.
…which is why calcium, iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D are quite common supplements to get prescribed by doctors after a certain age.
Still, it’s best to try getting things from one’s diet first all of all, of course.
Things we can’t (reasonably) get from food
This is another category entirely. There are many supplements that are convenient forms of things readily found in a lot of food, such as vitamins and minerals, or phytochemicals like quercetin, fisetin, and lycopene (to name just a few of very many).
Then there are things not readily found in food, or at least, not in food that’s readily available in supermarkets.
For example, if you go to your local supermarket and ask where the mimosa is, they’ll try to sell you a cocktail mix instead of the roots, bark, or leaves of a tropical tree. It is also unlikely they’ll stock lion’s mane mushroom, or reishi.
If perchance you do get the chance to acquire fresh lion’s mane mushroom, by the way, give it a try! It’s delicious shallow-fried in a little olive oil with black pepper and garlic.
In short, this last category, the things most of us can’t reasonably get from food without going far out of our way, are the kind of thing whereby supplements actually can be helpful.
And yet, still, not every supplement has evidence to support the claims made by its sellers, so it’s good to do your research beforehand. How To Rebuild Your Cartilage

We’ve covered before the topic of wear-and-tear on joints such as:

But what of cartilage, in particular? A common belief is “once it’s gone, it’s gone”, but that’s not quite right.
Cartilage is living tissue (metabolically active, with living cells). Within this tissue, specialist cells called chondrocytes produce extracellular cartilage matrix and collagen fibers, which provide smooth joint gliding as well as shock absorption.
Is exercise good or bad for cartilage?
Yes, yes it is. Exercise is good or bad for cartilage depending on the details:
- High-impact exercise e.g. running, jumping) places stress on cartilage, which is broadly bad
- However, impact loading strengthens the subchondral bone plate (layer under cartilage)
Strengthening this bone layer can help in long-term adaptation for high-impact sports.

So, how to do that without wiping out your cartilage first?
Building up
A gradual process is what’s called-for here:
- Start with cyclic, non-impact moderate resistance exercises (e.g. cycling, rowing, swimming).
- Gradually add soft-impact loading (e.g. fast walking, soft jogging).
- Incorporate strength training to improve overall joint stability (e.g. leg press, for lower body joints)
- Slowly transition to running and jumping over a long period to allow tissues to adapt.
How exactly you go about that is a matter of personal taste, but here are some illustrative examples:
- Indoor* cycling
- Cross trainer
- Leg press machine
- Tennis
*Why indoor? It’s so that you can control the resistance level at the twist of a knob, and get on and off when you want.

Note that HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training, not High Impact Interval Training!
Strength from the inside
One of the most important things for cartilage is collagen. You can supplement that, or if you’re vegetarian/vegan, you can take its constituent parts to improve your own synthesis of it.

Many people feel lonely and disconnected, often not knowing how to make new friends. And yet, social connection strongly predicts happiness, while lack of it is linked to diseases and a shorter life.
One mistake that people make is thinking it has to be about shared interests; that can help, but proximity and shared time are much more important.
Another stumbling block for many is that adult responsibilities and distractions (work, kids, technology) often take priority over friendships—but loneliness is surprisingly highest among young people, worsened by the pandemic’s impact on social interactions.
And even when friendships are made, they fade without attention, often accidentally, impacting both people involved. Other friendships can be lost following big life changes such as moving house or the end of a relationship. And for people above a certain advanced age, friendship groups can shrink due to death, if one’s friends are all in the same age group.
But, all is not lost. We can make friends with people of any age, and old friendships can be revived by a simple invitation. We can also take a “build it and they will come” approach, by organizing events and being the one who invites others.
It’s easy to fear rejection—most people do—but it’s worth overcoming for the potential rewards. That said, building friendships requires time, patience, caring about others, and being open about yourself, which can involve a degree of vulnerability too.
In short: be laid-back while still prioritizing friendships, show genuine interest, and stay open to social opportunities.

Generally speaking, the world’s go-to gold standard diet for good health is the Mediterranean Diet.

However, it’s far from being the only healthy way of eating; indeed, there are many options to choose from. Granted, not all of the options are good (some popular diets are frankly ruinous to the health), but a good number of them are, especially if you have a particular health goal in mind.

Today, we’ll be looking at a traditional dietary approach from Tanzania!
The study
The medium-sized (n=77, so not huge, but certainly statistically significant) study involved healthy Tanzanians from rural and urban areas, comparing traditional diets (including ugali, mchicha, kibiru, and mbege*) with Western diets, by switching these around in groups.
What they found:
- Switching to a Western diet raised inflammatory proteins and weakened infection defense
- Switching to a traditional diet reduced inflammatory biomarkers and symptoms of inflammation
- Some health impacts (from both sides) persisted even four weeks after diet changes, showing lasting effects.
*You may be wondering what these things are, so…
- Ugali is a kind of thick porridge
- Mchicha is a traditional vegetable dish made with okra and greens
- Kibiru is boiled green plantain with kidney beans
- Mbege is a fermented millet and banana-based drink
A special note about mbege: mbege is considered a kind of beer, but its alcohol content is usually very low, more like Eastern European kvass. In terms of culinary experience when drinking it, however, it’s very different from kvass, and is more like a Desi lassi, making it a great accompaniment to spicy food, if you’re so inclined.

So, this will be in reference to a This-or-That from last week:

Let’s break down your question into parts:
- Is it comparable to quercetin?
- Does it have special properties of its own?
- Is it worth supplementing?
Is it comparable to quercetin?
They are both flavonols, and potent ones at that. Similarities include that they’re found in many of the same plants, and that (like most if not all polyphenols) they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, which in turn usually translate to anti-aging and anticancer benefits too.

Does it have special properties of its own?
Yes it does!
❝Epidemiological studies have shown an inverse relationship between kaempferol intake and cancer.
Kaempferol may help by augmenting the body’s antioxidant defense against free radicals, which promote the development of cancer.
At the molecular level, kaempferol has been reported to modulate a number of key elements in cellular signal transduction pathways linked to apoptosis, angiogenesis, inflammation, and metastasis.
Significantly, kaempferol inhibits cancer cell growth and angiognesis and induces cancer cell apoptosis, but on the other hand, kaempferol appears to preserve normal cell viability, in some cases exerting a protective effect.❞

It is also particularly good for the gut:
❝Most recently, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated the significance of kaempferol in the regulation of intestinal function and the mitigation of intestinal inflammation❞

This also means it is particularly efficacious against food allergies:
❝we screened food ingredients with the expectation of finding dietary compounds that exert beneficial effects on intestinal immune tolerance and identified kaempferol, a flavonoid, as the compound that most effectively increased Aldh1a2 mRNA levels❞

That one’s a bit scientifically denser than we usually try to find when citing sources here, so here’s a pop-science article about the same thing, which explains in more words than we have room to here:
Flavonoid kaempferol could offer natural relief for food allergies ← much lighter reading, but still very informative
Kaempferol (like quercetin, granted) is also a potent neuroprotective agent, not least of all because its anti-inflammatory powers extend to reducing neuroinflammation (not everything does, because not everything we ingest can pass the blood-brain barrier to affect what goes on in the brain):

❝it may be used to treat numerous acute and chronic inflammation-induced diseases, including intervertebral disc degeneration and colitis, as well as post-menopausal bone loss and acute lung injury. In addition, it has beneficial effects against cancer, liver injury, obesity and diabetes, inhibits vascular endothelial inflammation, protects the cranial nerve and heart function, and may be used for treating fibroproliferative disorders, including hypertrophic scar.❞

Is it worth supplementing?
If you eat a lot of leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and/or citrus fruits, and/or drink tea (true teas from tea plants, not miscellaneous herbal infusions), then you probably get a good dose of kaempferol already.
However, if you want to supplement, hawthorn berry is not a bad one to go with, like this example product on Amazon 😎
