Not long ago, most people thought of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, as a childhood condition that would eventually be outgrown. Now it’s everywhere.
TikTok videos describe “ADHD moments” that feel instantly familiar, clinics are booked out for months, and adults are finally getting diagnoses that explain years of chaos and exhaustion.
This visibility has helped people understand ADHD. However, it has also led to a shift in how medicines intended to alleviate symptoms are being used and, in some cases, misused.
What is ADHD? How does medication treat it?
ADHD affects how the brain handles attention, motivation and self-control. For some, this means racing thoughts, missed deadlines and constant restlessness. For others, it feels like a fog of distraction that makes following through on tasks frustratingly difficult.
Brain imaging studies in people with ADHD show subtle differences in how attention and reward circuits communicate. These systems rely on chemical messengers such as dopamine and noradrenaline. When the signalling of these messengers is less efficient, even simple, everyday tasks become harder to start and sustain.
Medicines such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) and lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) boost dopamine and noradrenaline activity in the brain, enhancing focus, motivation and impulse control.
Large clinical reviews also show wider benefits, including reduced risks of depression, substance misuse, and even criminal behaviour in people with ADHD.
How many people take ADHD medications?
Stimulant prescriptions more than quadrupled between 2013 and 2023, from about 800,000 to more than 4 million scripts per year.
More people getting diagnosed and treated is a positive step. But it also means far more medication is circulating in the community and it’s easier for these drugs to be shared, sold, or used by someone they weren’t prescribed for.
The most recent National Drug Strategy Household Survey estimates roughly 400,000 Australians – about one in 48 people – used prescription stimulants non-medically in the past year. Among those in their 20s, this figure rises to about one in 20.
Why do people without ADHD use these drugs?
Some people use stimulants to stay awake studying or working long hours.
Others use them recreationally, seeking a “high” or to suppress their appetite.
Online, they’re often touted as “smart drugs” – or cognitive enhancers – promising to enhance productivity and brainpower. This isn’t a new idea. In the 1970s, psychologist Corneliu Giurgea coined the term “nootropic” arguing “man is not going to wait passively for millions of years before evolution offers him a better brain”. But more than 50 years later, the science doesn’t support that dream.
Research shows much of the “boost” people feel from stimulants comes from expectation rather than actual improvement. In one experiment, university students who believed they had taken Ritalin reported feeling more focused and euphoric even when they had a placebo – a sugar pill with no active drug.
For those without ADHD, stimulants can make you feel more awake and confident, but they don’t actually make you smarter. A controlled trial found that while stimulants led people to work longer and try harder, the quality of their work dropped, especially for those who performed well without the drugs.
So, these medications might push you to put in more effort, but that effort doesn’t always translate into better results.
What are the risks?
Medications such as Ritalin and Vyvanse are made to strict pharmaceutical standards, so many people assume they are safer than illicit drugs.
But their safety depends entirely on careful medical supervision, including appropriate dosing and regular health monitoring. Without this oversight, and when mixed with alcohol and other substances, risks increase sharply.
When people misuse these drugs – taking higher or more frequent doses – they risk developing a tolerance, meaning they need increasingly larger amounts to feel the same effects.
The high also wears off sharply, leading to a “crash” of fatigue, irritability and low mood, which can push people to take more.
Over time, this cycle may trigger anxiety, insomnia and heart problems.
Reflecting this, a study of emergency department presentations for stimulant-related problems from 2004 to 2014 found visits rose alongside greater availability.
How are these medications controlled?
In Australia, ADHD stimulants are Schedule 8 controlled drugs, meaning their prescribing is tightly regulated, however rules differ by state and territory.
New national ADHD guidelines recommend more consistent oversight, shared care between specialists and GPs, and better follow-up to reduce misuse and diversion.
Policy is evolving, but harm reduction hasn’t yet caught up. Compared with alcohol, tobacco or cannabis, public education on prescription stimulant misuse remains minimal.
Australia’s history offers a cautionary tale about responding to the misuse of prescription medications. When opioid and benzodiazepine prescribing surged in previous decades, supply restrictions alone failed to curb misuse.
Instead, people turned to black markets and unregulated online sources, where counterfeit and high-potency products fill the gap.
If stimulant policy follows a similar path – focusing on control but neglecting prevention and education – we risk repeating those mistakes.
In the United States, rising stimulant prescriptions have been accompanied by sharp increases in misuse and stimulant use disorder – the clinical term for addiction.
In response, health agencies adopted more balanced approaches – integrating prescription drug monitoring programs, clinician training on safer prescribing and community-based education campaigns.
As awareness and diagnosis of ADHD continue to rise in Australia, adopting these measures – including real-time prescription monitoring – could reduce harms while preserving access for those who genuinely need treatment.

The Best Way To Get Flexible, By Science

Little and often
Science was done (references in the video), and found:
- Stretching for 5 minutes or less total across the week? Not great results.
- Stretching for between 5 and 10 minutes? Much better.
- Stretching for more than 10 minutes? Little to no extra benefit.
So, 5–10 minutes per week? That sounds easy. Shall we do it all on a Monday morning and get it over with?
Nope, because the science also found:
- Stretching six days a week gave the absolute best results.
- Stretching three times per week also gave improvements.
- Stretching once per week gave no significant improvements.
So, spread out over several days per week, if not every day, seems ideal. Now, how long to spend per stretch? Research is consistent on this:
- 30 seconds per stretch (holding the stretch) is the sweet spot.
- 30 seconds is better than 15 seconds.
- 60 seconds brings no extra benefit over 30 seconds, so don’t waste your time!*
*Unless you want to, of course. Time you enjoyed wasting was not time wasted 🙂
Now, will science tell us how many sets to do? Yes it will:
- Doing two to four sets of each stretch produces the best gains.
- After that, doing more sets doesn’t give extra flexibility.
Example: Stretching Your Hamstrings
Here’s how it would look:
- Hold a hamstring stretch for 30 seconds.
- Rest (or switch to the other leg).
- Repeat for three sets each side.
This takes about three minutes total. Do this three times per week, and you’ve only spent nine minutes, yet you’ll see big flexibility gains!

Cassava vs Parsnip – Which is Healthier?

Our Verdict
When comparing cassava to parsnips, we picked the parsnips.
Why?
This one wasn’t close!
In terms of macros, cassava has more than 2x the carbs while parsnips have nearly 3x the fiber, making for a very clear win for parsnips.
In the category of vitamins, cassava has more of vitamins B3 and C, while parsnips have more of vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, B9, E, and K, with very large margins of difference in the latter two cases. Another overwhelming win for parsnips.
Looking at minerals, cassava is not higher in any minerals, while parsnips have more calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc; a very one-sided win for parsnips!
So, by all means enjoy either or both (diversity is good), but there’s a clear winner here today, and it’s parsnips.

The “Yes I Can” Salad

Sometimes, we are given to ask ourselves: “Can I produce a healthy and tasty salad out of what I have in?” and today we show how, with a well-stocked pantry, the answer is “yes I can”, regardless of what is (or isn’t) in the fridge.
You will need
- 1 can cannellini beans, drained
- 1 can sardines (if vegetarian/vegan, substitute ½ can chickpeas, drained)
- 1 can mandarin segments
- 1 handful pitted black olives, from a jar (or from a can, if you want to keep the “yes I can” theme going)
- ½ red onion, thinly sliced (this can be from frozen, defrosted—sliced/chopped onion is always a good thing to have in your freezer, by the way; your writer here always has 1–6 lbs of chopped onions in hers, divided into 1lb bags)
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley (this can be freeze-dried, but fresh is good if you have it)
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tsp miso paste
- 1 tsp honey (omit if you don’t care for sweetness; substitute with agave nectar if you do like sweetness but don’t want to use honey specifically)
- 1 tsp red chili flakes
Method
(we suggest you read everything at least once before doing anything)
1) Combine the onion and the lemon juice in a small bowl, massaging gently
2) Mix (in another bowl) the miso paste with the chili flakes, chia seeds, honey, olive oil, and the spare juice from the can of mandarin segments, and whisk it to make a dressing.
3) Add the cannellini beans, sardines (break them into bite-size chunks), mandarin segments, olives, and parsley, tossing them thoroughly (but gently) in the dressing.
4) Top with the sliced onion, discarding the excess lemon juice, and serve:

Which Osteoporosis Medication, If Any, Is Right For You?

All of those look and diet and/or exercise, with “diet” including supplementation. But what of medications?
So many choices (not all of them right for everyone)
The UK’s Royal Osteoporosis Society says of the very many osteoporosis meds available:
❝In terms of effectiveness, they all reduce your risk of broken bones by roughly the same amount.
Which treatment is right for you will depend on a number of things.❞
…before then going on to list a pageful of things it will depend on, and giving no specific information about what prescriptions or proscriptions may be made based on those factors.

We’ll try to do better than that here, though we have less space. So let’s get down to it…
First line drug offerings
After diet/supplementation and (if applicable) hormones, the first line of actual drug offerings are generally biphosphates.
Biphosphonates work by slowing down your osteoclasts—the cells that break down your bones. They may sound like terrible things to have in the body at all, but remember, your body is always rebuilding itself and destruction is a necessary act to facilitate creation. However, sometimes things can get out of balance, and biphosphonates help tip things back into balance.
Common biphosphonates include Alendronate/Fosamax, Risedronate/Actonel, Ibandronate/Boniva, and Zolendronic acid/Reclast.
A common downside is that they aren’t absorbed well by the stomach (despite being mostly oral administration, though IV versions exist too) and can cause heartburn / general stomach upset.
An uncommon downside is that messing with the body’s ability to break down bones can cause bones to be rebuilt-in-place slightly incorrectly, which can—paradoxically—cause fractures. But that’s rare and is more common if the drugs are taken in much higher doses (as for bone cancer rather than osteoporosis).
Bone-builders
If you already have low bone density (so you’re fighting to rebuild your bones, not just slow deterioration), then you may need more of a boost.
Bone-building medications include Teriparatide/Forteo, Abaloparatide/Tymlos, and Romosozumab/Evenity.
These are usually given by injection, usually for a course of one or two years.
Once the bone has been built up, it’ll probably be recommended that you switch to a biphosphate or other bone-stabilizing medication.
Estrogen-like effects, without estrogen
If your osteoporosis (or osteoporosis risk) comes from being post-menopausal, estrogen is a very common (and effective!) prescription. However, some people may wish to avoid it, if for example you have a heightened breast cancer risk, which estrogen can exacerbate.
So, medications that have estrogen-like effects post-menopause, but without actually increasing estrogen levels, include: Raloxifene/Evista, and also all the meds we mentioned in the bone-building category above.
Raloxifene/Evista specifically mimics the action of estrogen on bones, while at the same time blocking the effect of estrogen on other tissues.

Beans, chickpeas, and lentils are well-established super-healthy foods, but they’re often not a lot of people’s favorite. And why? Usually because of unhappy associations with boring dishes that can barely be called dishes.
This book raises the bar for pulses of various kinds, and not only provides recipes (180 of them) but also guidelines on principles, tips and tricks, what works and what doesn’t, what makes things better or worse, perfect partners, sprouting, and more.
The recipes themselves are not all vegan, nor even all vegetarian, but the beans are the star throughout. For those who are vegan or vegetarian, it’s easy to make substitutions, not least of all because the author is generous with “try this instead of that” and “consider also” suggestions, to help us tailor each dish to our personal preferences, and even the desired vibe of a given meal.
The dishes are neither overly simplistic (it’s not a student survival cookbook, by any means) nor overly complicated; rather, enough is done to make each dish invitingly tasty, and nothing extraneous or pretentious is added for the sake of being fancy. This is about delicious home cooking, nothing more nor less.
If the book has a weakness, it’s that visual learners will feel the absence of pictures for many recipes. But, the text is clear, the instructions are easy to follow, and a photo for each dish would probably have doubled the cost of the book, at least, while halving the number of recipes.
Bottom line: if you’d like to get more beans and other pulses in your diet, but are unsure how to make it exciting, this is an excellent option.

Falling vaccination rates put children at risk of preventable diseases. Governments need a new strategy to boost uptake

Child vaccination is one of the most cost-effective health interventions. It accounts for 40% of the global reduction in infant deaths since 1974 and has led to big health gains in Australia over the past two decades.
Australia has been a vaccination success story. Ten years after we begun mass vaccination against polio in 1956, it was virtually eliminated. Our child vaccination rates have been among the best in the world.
But after peaking in 2020, child vaccination in Australia is falling. Governments need to implement a comprehensive strategy to boost vaccine uptake, or risk exposing more children to potentially preventable infectious diseases.

Thirty years ago, Australia’s childhood vaccination rates were dismal. Then, in 1997, governments introduced the National Immunisation Program to vaccinate children against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, and measles.
Measures to increase coverage included financial incentives for parents and doctors, a public awareness campaign, and collecting and sharing local data to encourage the least-vaccinated regions to catch up with the rest of the country.
What followed was a public health triumph. In 1995, only 52% of one-year-olds were fully immunised. By 2020, Australia had reached 95% coverage for one-year-olds and five-year-olds. At this level, it’s difficult even for highly infectious diseases, such as measles, to spread in the community, protecting both the vaccinated and unvaccinated.

In 1999, the Northern Territory’s vaccination rate for one-year-olds was the lowest in the country, lagging the national average by six percentage points. By 2020, that gap had virtually disappeared.
The difference between vaccination rates for First Nations children and other children also narrowed considerably.
It made children healthier. The years of healthy life lost due to vaccine-preventable diseases for children aged four and younger fell by nearly 40% in the decade to 2015.
Some diseases have even been eliminated in Australia.
Our success is slipping away
But that success is at risk. Since 2020, the share of children who are fully vaccinated has fallen every year. For every child vaccine on the National Immunisation Schedule, protection was lower in 2024 than in 2020.
Gaps between parts of Australia are opening back up. Vaccination rates in the highest-coverage parts of Australia are largely stable, but they are falling quickly in areas with lower vaccination.
In 2018, there were only ten communities where more than 10% of one-year-old children were not fully vaccinated. Last year, that number ballooned to 50 communities. That leaves more areas vulnerable to disease and outbreaks.
While Noosa, the Gold Coast Hinterland and Richmond Valley (near Byron Bay) have persistently had some of the country’s lowest vaccination rates, areas such as Manjimup in Western Australia and Tasmania’s South East Coast have recorded big declines since 2018.
Missing out on vaccination isn’t just a problem for children.
One preprint study (which is yet to be peer-reviewed) suggests vaccination during pregnancy may also be declining.
Far too many older Australians are missing out on recommended vaccinations for flu, COVID, pneumococcal and shingles. Vaccination rates in aged care homes for flu and COVID are worryingly low.
What’s going wrong?
Australia isn’t alone. Since the pandemic, child vaccination rates have fallen in many high-income countries, including New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Globally, in 2023, measles cases rose by 20%, and just this year, a measles outbreak in rural Texas has put at least 13 children in hospital.
Alarmingly, some regions in Australia have lower measles vaccination than that Texas county.
The timing of trends here and overseas suggests things shifted, or at least accelerated, during the pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy, fuelled by misinformation about COVID vaccines, is a growing threat.
This year, vaccine sceptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr was appointed to run the US health system, and Louisiana’s top health official has reportedly cancelled the promotion of mass vaccination.
In Australia, a recent survey found 6% of parents didn’t think vaccines were safe, and 5% believed they don’t work.
Those concerns are far more common among parents with children who are partially vaccinated or unvaccinated. Among the 2% of parents whose children are unvaccinated, almost half believe vaccines are not safe for their child, and four in ten believe vaccines didn’t work.
Other consequences of the pandemic were a spike in the cost of living, and a health system struggling to meet demand. More than one in ten parents said cost and difficulty getting an appointment were barriers to vaccinating their children.
There’s no single cause of sliding vaccination rates, so there’s no one solution. The best way to reverse these worrying trends is to work on all the key barriers at once – from a lack of awareness, to inconvenience, to lack of trust.
What governments should do
Governments should step up public health campaigns that counter misinformation, boost awareness of immunisation and its benefits, and communicate effectively to low-vaccination groups. The new Australian Centre for Disease Control should lead the charge.
Primary health networks, the regional bodies responsible for improving primary care, should share data on vaccination rates with GPs and pharmacies. These networks should also help make services more accessible to communities who are missing out, such as migrant groups and disadvantaged families.
State and local governments should do the same, sharing data and providing support to make maternal child health services and school-based vaccination programs accessible for all families.
Governments can communicate better about the benefits of vaccination. Yuri A/Shutterstock Governments should also be more ambitious about tackling the growing vaccine divides between different parts of the country. The relevant performance measure in the national vaccination agreement is weak. States must only increase five-year-old vaccination rates in four of the ten areas where it is lowest. That only covers a small fraction of low-vaccination areas, and only the final stage of child vaccination.
Australia needs to set tougher goals, and back them with funding.
Governments should fund tailored interventions in areas with the lowest rates of vaccination. Proven initiatives include training trusted community members as “community champions” to promote vaccinations, and pop-up clinics or home visits for free vaccinations.
At this time of year, childcare centres and schools are back in full swing. But every year, each new intake has less protection than the previous cohort. Governments are developing a new national vaccination strategy and must seize the opportunity to turn that trend around. If it commits to a bold national plan, Australia can get back to setting records for child vaccination.
