
UTI Keeps Returning? A Very Small Bladder Could Help

The world’s smallest bladder
First, why UTIs return: uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), the main cause of UTIs, can invade bladder cells and establish protected bacterial “reservoirs” deep within the bladder wall. These hidden bacteria can survive antibiotic treatment and later trigger another infection.
However, standard antibiotic testing typically examines bacteria in still, nutrient-rich liquid—which doesn’t mimic real life conditions much.
So, researchers (Dr. Jennifer Rohn et al.) have developed a human 3D “micro-bladder” that reproduces urine flow and bladder conditions more realistically than conventional laboratory tests. In particular, the micro-bladder showed that continuous urine flow and interaction with bladder tissue substantially change how UPEC behaves and responds to treatment.
This meant that, for example, nitrofurantoin, a commonly used UTI antibiotic, performed well in conventional lab testing but was unable to completely clear the infection in the more realistic micro-bladder model.
In contrast, further testing of the micro-bladder revealed that a cocktail of bacteriophages—viruses that specifically infect and destroy bacteria—was able to reduce the protected bacterial reservoirs inside the bladder wall, something the antibiotic did not accomplish as effectively.
Now, phages alone also struggled to completely clear bacteria under flowing conditions, but combining phages with the antibiotic produced better results, suggesting that the two treatments could potentially complement each other.
As an extra benefit, phage treatment also appeared to increase early immune signaling in the bladder tissue, including cytokines and chemokines that help coordinate inflammation and recruit immune cells.

Why alcohol-related cancer deaths have more than doubled
US cancer deaths attributed to alcohol increased from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023, according to an analysis of more than three decades of Global Burden of Disease data.
Nor was it just about liver cancers; alcohol was linked to deaths from breast, prostate, colorectal, stomach, pancreatic, liver, esophageal, and head-and-neck cancers.
Importantly, even low alcohol intake can effect this: increased cancer risk has been associated with approximately 5–15 grams of alcohol per day. A US standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol, so one drink a day can fall within this range.
For what it’s worth, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, the same category that includes asbestos.
So if you wouldn’t willingly consume asbestos, you might want to rethink alcohol, if you otherwise drink that.

Don’t fall sick!
When kids get sick in the fall, it’s usually mostly not because of the change in season itself, or because their immune system functions less well at that time.
Rather, during summer vacation, children often spend more time outdoors and in smaller groups. When school starts, the number of close contacts rises sharply, increasing exposure to respiratory viruses.
Furthermore, earlier wake-up times, less sleep, changes in eating patterns, reduced outdoor time, and emotional stress from returning to school can affect overall well-being, but these changes do not necessarily weaken the immune system significantly.
That said, many different respiratory viruses can cause illness most easily in early fall (due to atmospheric changes making transmission easier), with RSV (colds) and influenza (flu) becoming increasingly important later in the fall and winter. Symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, sore throat, fatigue, poor appetite, and fever often overlap, making it difficult to identify the specific virus from symptoms alone.
Of course, adequate sleep, a varied diet, regular physical activity, good hydration, outdoor time, thorough handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding shared water bottles or utensils can all help reduce infection risk, so those are all great things to do.
In terms of what not to do, although exposure to certain pathogens can create immune memory, respiratory viruses are numerous and can mutate rapidly. Repeated respiratory infections therefore do not provide a reliable immune-strengthening benefit.
Instead, vaccines offer safer, more targeted protection against preventable infections than deliberately experiencing illnesses.

Good For The Eyes; Good For The Brain

…and while we discussed its well-established benefits against cognitive decline (which is to be expected, because omega-3 is good against inflammation, and a large part of age-related neurodegeneration is heavily related to neuroinflammation), there’s a part of the brain we didn’t talk about in that article: the eyes.
We did, however, talk in another article about supplements that benefit the eyes and [the rest of the] brain, and the important links between the two, to the point that an examination of the levels of lutein in the retina can inform clinicians about the levels of lutein in the brain as a whole, and strongly predict Alzheimer’s disease (because Alzheimer’s patients have significantly less lutein), here:
Now, let’s tie these two ideas together
In a recent (June 2024) meta-analysis of high-quality observational studies from the US and around the world, involving nearly a quarter of a million people over 40 (n=241,151), researchers found that a higher intake of omega-3 is significantly linked to a lower risk of macular degeneration.
To put it in numbers, the highest intake of omega-3s was associated with an 18% reduced risk of early stage macular degeneration.
They also looked at a breakdown of what kinds of omega-3, and found that taking a blend DHA and EPA worked best of all, although of people who only took one kind, DHA was the best “single type” option.

A word about trans-fatty acids (TFAs)
It was another feature of the same study that, while looking at fatty acids in general, they also found that higher consumption of trans-fatty acids was associated with a higher risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration.
Specifically, the highest intake of TFAs was associated with a more than 2x increased risk.
There are two main dietary sources of trans-fatty acids:
- Processed foods that were made with TFAs; these have now been banned in a lot of places, but only quite recently, and the ban is on the processing, not the sale, so if you buy processed foods that contain ingredients that were processed before 2021 (not uncommon, given the long life of many processed foods), the chances of them having TFAs is higher.
- Most animal products. Most notably from mammals and their milk, so beef, pork, lamb, milk, cheese, and yes even yogurt. Poultry and fish technically do also contain TFAs in most cases, but the levels are much lower.

What kinds of things is this book most likely to help with? A lot of common forms of stress, anxiety, self-esteem issues, cravings, shame, and relationship issues. Other things too, but we can’t list everything and that list already covers a lot of very high-incidence stuff.
Bottom line: if CBT isn’t something already in your toolbox, this book will help you add all its best tips and tricks.

Play reduces stress and lifts wellbeing – and adults benefit as much as children do

Somewhere along the way to adulthood, time to play fades away. We tend to trade silliness and imagination for seriousness and busyness.
Yet there is clear evidence that adults benefit from playfulness just as children do.
Research shows that adults who engage in playful activities tend to cope better with stress, experience more positive emotions, show greater resilience when facing challenges, and report higher levels of life satisfaction.
Our research with New Zealand families highlights how supporting unstructured play can help adults feel less stressed and more connected, while also normalising playfulness in everyday family life.
In a world that demands constant busyness, play offers essential qualities we are at risk of losing: spontaneity, togetherness and the freedom to have fun.
Play in adulthood can look different from play in childhood. It is less about toys or games and more about how we approach everyday experiences.
Adult play can be physical, social, creative or imaginative. It might involve movement, music, humour, storytelling, problem-solving or simply doing something for the pleasure of it.
What makes an activity playful is not its form, but the mindset behind it: curiosity, openness and a willingness to engage without a fixed outcome. For adults, play is often woven into hobbies and moments of exploration that sit outside work and obligation.

A recent study suggests a potential neurobiological pathway between playfulness and cognitive health in older adults.
At its core, play provides a space to reset, allowing us to step outside pressure and performance. In doing so, it supports not only stress regulation, but sustains emotional balance and quality of life across adulthood.
The value of playfulness also goes beyond the individual. Playful engagement in social contexts helps build shared emotional resources, shaping how people interact and cope together over time.
Playfulness in adults is also associated with higher emotional intelligence, including stronger ability to perceive and manage emotions in social situations. Observational studies further show that adults who engage playfully are more empathetic, reciprocal and positive in their interactions with others, reinforcing social connection and belonging.
Importantly, play has a unique ability to cut across age boundaries. When adults and children play together, even if unrelated, differences in age, role and status tend to fade, replaced by shared enjoyment and interaction.
Research suggests these inter-generational play experiences can strengthen relationships, support wellbeing and reduce age-based stereotypes. Play becomes a shared language, bridging age divides that are often reinforced by modern living.
As our work highlights, unstructured play remains both possible and meaningful in contemporary life, with families reporting benefits for children’s development as well as family cohesion and shared wellbeing. These findings suggest play can function as an ordinary, rather than exceptional, feature of family and community life.
Making room for play in everyday life
If play matters across the lifespan, the spaces we inhabit need to support it.
Yet most public environments continue to treat play as something designed primarily for children. Research in urban design suggests the most effective playful environments for adults are those that don’t announce themselves as playgrounds, but instead embed playful possibilities into everyday settings.
Features such as oversized steps, stepping stones, interactive seating or winding paths can invite exploration, balance and movement. In some cities, this extends to adult-sized play elements integrated into public space, such as musical swings that turn routine movement into playful interaction.
Despite these examples, play-oriented design remains the exception rather than the norm, with most public play infrastructure still concentrated in children’s spaces. Designing cities that invite adult play as part of everyday life could be a valuable investment in inclusion, social connection and population wellbeing.
Environments that support play are not just physical, but social. Just as urban design can invite or discourage playful movement, social norms shape whether play feels acceptable in adult life.
When play is treated as embarrassing, indulgent or something to apologise for, it quickly disappears. But when playful behaviour is visible and unremarkable, it becomes easier for others to participate.
Play has long been treated as something separate from adult life, confined to childhood or reserved for rare moments of leisure. Yet the evidence suggests playfulness continues to matter well beyond early development.
Reframing play as a legitimate part of adult life opens up new ways of thinking about wellbeing across the lifespan.

Ask Not What Your Lymphatic System Can Do For You…
Just kidding; we’ll cover that first, as it’s definitely not talked about enough.
The lymphatic system is the system in the body that moves lymph around. It’s made of glands, nodes, and vessels:
- The glands (such as the tonsils and the adenoids) and nodes filter out bacteria and produce white blood cells. Specific functions may be, well, specialized—beyond the scope of today’s article—but that’s the broad function.
- The vessels are the tubes that allow those things to be moved around, suspended in lymph.
What’s lymph? It’s a colorless water-like liquid that transports immune cells, nutrients (and waste) around the body (through the lymphatic system).
Yes, it works alongside your vasculature; when white blood cells aren’t being deployed en masse into your bloodstream to deal with some threat, they’re waiting in the wings in the lymphatic system.
While your blood is pumped around by your heart, lymph moves based on a variety of factors, including contractions of small specialized lymphatic muscles, the pressure gradient created by the combination of those and gravity, and the movements of your body itself.

Modelling the lymphatic system
To oversimplify it in few words for the sake of moving on: you can most of the time: think of it as an ancillary network supporting your circulatory system that unlike blood, doesn’t deal with oxygen or sugars, but does deal with a lot of other things, including:
- water and salt balance
- immune cells and other aspects of immune function
- transports fats (and any fat-soluble vitamins in them) into circulation
- cleans up stuff that gets stuck between cells
- general detoxification
There’s a lot that can go wrong if lymph isn’t flowing as it should
Too much to list here, but to give an idea:
- Arthritis and many autoimmune diseases
- Cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome
- Obesity, diabetes, and organ failure
- Alzheimer’s and other dementias
- Lymphadenitis, lymphangitis, and lymphedenopathy
- Lymphomas and Hodgkin’s disease (both are types of lymphatic cancer)
- Cancers of other kinds, because of things not being cleaned up where and when they should be
Yikes! That’s a lot of important things for a mostly-forgotten system to be taking care of protecting us from!
What you can do for your lymphatic system, to avoid those things!
Happily, there are easy things we can do to give our lymph some love, such as:
Massage therapy (and foam rolling)
This is the go-to that many people/publications recommend. It’s good! It’s certainly not the most important thing to do, but it’s good.
You can even use a simple gadget like this one to help move the lymph around, without needing to learn arcane massage techniques.
Exercise (move your body!)
This is a lot more important. The more we move our body, the more lymph moves around. The more lymph moves around today, the more easily it will move around tomorrow. A healthy constant movement of lymph throughout the lymphatic system is key to keeping everything running smoothly.

There is often more to hamstring flexibility than just stretching:
Three steps
The method focuses on three areas: diet, mindset, and movement.
Why diet? Poor gut health and inflammation, often caused by processed and fast foods, contribute to chronic hamstring tightness. The video suggests nutrient-dense meals like Greek yogurt with poached eggs. As for collagen, that is found most abundantly in the bones and skin of fish and other animals, but if you are vegan/vegetarian, fear not, you can just make sure to eat plenty of its constituent parts instead, and synthesize it yourself like any other animal. Why mindset? Addressing pain and other somatic (bodily) concerns involves understanding the body as a single interconnected system. So, it’s necessary to also take care of any emotional stress or other underlying conditions, as well as ensuring your hormones are all in order.
Why movement? Machine-based training, which isolates muscles, can cause imbalances. Instead, consider functional movements like hanging and compound exercises such as Pilates or other calisthenics systems. These improve core strength, enhance flexibility, and prevent stiffness, ensuring better overall function.
Some example exercises:
- Bent knee hamstring stretch: hold for 2 seconds; do 10–12 reps (2 sets per leg).
- Straight leg active isolation: focus on quad engagement with assistance from a band; 10–12 reps (2 sets per leg).
- Active hip abductors: target IT band and glute medius; 1 set of 12 reps per leg.
- Active lunge stretch: incorporate a band to intensify the stretch; 2 seconds at the top range.

Paulina Porizkova (Former Supermodel) Talks Menopause, Aging, & Appearances

Are supermodels destined to all eventually become “Grizabella the Glamor Cat”, a washed-up shell of their former glory? Is it true that “men grow cold as girls grow old, and we all lose our charms in the end”? And what—if anything—can we do about it?
Insights from a retired professional
Paulina Porizkova is 56, and she looks like she’s… 56, maybe? Perhaps a little younger or a bit older depending on the camera and lighting and such.
It’s usually the case, on glossy magazine covers and YouTube thumbnails, that there’s a 20-year difference between appearance and reality, but not here. Why’s that?
Porizkova noted that many celebrities of a similar age look younger, and felt bad. But then she noted that they’d all had various cosmetic work done, and looked for images of “real” women in their mid-50s, and didn’t find them.
Note: we at 10almonds do disagree with one thing here: we say that someone who has had cosmetic work done is no less real for it; it’s a simple matter of personal choice and bodily autonomy. She is, in our opinion, making the same mistake as people make when they say such things as “real people, rather than models”, as though models are not also real people.
Porizkova found modelling highly lucrative but dehumanizing, and did not enjoy the objectification involved—and she enjoyed even less, when she reached a certain age, negative comments about aging, and people being visibly wrong-footed when meeting her, as they had misconceptions based on past images.
As a child and younger adult through her modelling career, she felt very much “seen and not heard”, and these days, she realizes she’s more interesting now but feels less seen. Menopause coincided with her marriage ending, and she felt unattractive and ignored by her husband; she questioned her self-worth, and felt very bad about it. Then her husband (they had separated, but had not divorced) died, and she felt even more isolated—but it heightened her sensitivity to life.
In her pain and longing for recognition, she reached out through her Instagram, crying, and received positive feedback—but still she struggles with expressing needs and feeling worthy.
And yet, when it comes to looks, she embraces her wrinkles as a form of expression, and values her natural appearance over cosmetic alterations.
She describes herself as a work in progress—still broken, still needing cleansing and healing, but proud of how far she’s come so far, and optimistic with regard to the future.
