N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is best-known for its liver support properties, but the benefits extend much further than that, and even include direct brain bonuses (as it does pass the blood-brain barrier):
More than just the liver
Inka Land, neuropsychologist, talks about her use of NAC over the course of the past year or so.
Most people take NAC to support liver health; for which it is considered safe and effective for reversing fatty liver disease, now also known as hepatic steatosis or steatotic liver disease.
For her, the most noticeable difference is that previously, she had 15–20 migraines a month plus cluster/tension headaches, whereas after taking 1.2g of NAC daily for 1–2 years, those migraines reduced to 1–3 per month, sometimes none, and the attacks themselves became shorter, milder, and easier to manage.
How it works: NAC acts as a precursor for glutathione (a key antioxidant in the brain and the rest of the body), counteracts oxidative stress, lowers inflammation, and helps balance neurotransmitters like that drive nerve overactivity.
NAC is able to do this because it crosses the blood–brain barrier and promotes natural glutathione production inside cells, while oral glutathione is usually less bioavailable (except the liposomal form, which is more expensive).
While she didn’t get to enjoy these benefits herself, because she didn’t have the initial problems they relieve, she also cites studies showing benefits alleviating some repetitive OCD-like symptoms (e.g. hair-pulling, nail-biting, skin-picking) and addictions (e.g. nicotine, alcohol, gambling).
As for dosage, research shows doses over 1 g per day are most effective, but you might want to bear in mind that for some people (based on her personal experience) it may cause nausea if taken on an empty stomach, making it best taken about 30 minutes before food (why 30 minutes before? Because that’s how long it takes for a cellulose capsule to get where it’s going and dissolve).

Our ‘food environments’ affect what we eat. Here’s how you can change yours to support healthier eating

In January, many people are setting new year’s resolutions around healthy eating. Achieving these is often challenging – it can be difficult to change our eating habits. But healthy diets can enhance physical and mental health, so improving what we eat is a worthwhile goal.
One reason it’s difficult to change our eating habits relates to our “food environments”. This term describes:
The collective physical, economic, policy and sociocultural surroundings, opportunities and conditions that influence people’s food and beverage choices and nutritional status.
Our current food environments are designed in ways that often make it easier to choose unhealthy foods than healthy ones. But it’s possible to change certain aspects of our personal food environments, making eating healthier a little easier.
Unhealthy food environments
It’s not difficult to find fast-food restaurants in Australian cities. Meanwhile, there are junk foods at supermarket checkouts, service stations and sporting venues. Takeaway and packaged foods and drinks routinely come in large portion sizes and are often considered tastier than healthy options.
Our food environments also provide us with various prompts to eat unhealthy foods via the media and advertising, alongside health and nutrition claims and appealing marketing images on food packaging.
At the supermarket, unhealthy foods are often promoted through prominent displays and price discounts.
We’re also exposed to various situations in our everyday lives that can make healthy eating challenging. For example, social occasions or work functions might see large amounts of unhealthy food on offer.
Not everyone is affected in the same way
People differ in the degree to which their food consumption is influenced by their food environments.
This can be due to biological factors (for example, genetics and hormones), psychological characteristics (such as decision making processes or personality traits) and prior experiences with food (for example, learned associations between foods and particular situations or emotions).
People who are more susceptible will likely eat more and eat more unhealthy foods than those who are more immune to the effects of food environments and situations.
Those who are more susceptible may pay greater attention to food cues such as advertisements and cooking smells, and feel a stronger desire to eat when exposed to these cues. Meanwhile, they may pay less attention to internal cues signalling hunger and fullness. These differences are due to a combination of biological and psychological characteristics.
These people might also be more likely to experience physiological reactions to food cues including changes in heart rate and increased salivation.
It’s common to eat junk food in front of the TV.
PR Image Factory/ShutterstockOther situational cues can also prompt eating for some people, depending on what they’ve learned about eating. Some of us tend to eat when we’re tired or in a bad mood, having learned over time eating provides comfort in these situations.
Other people will tend to eat in situations such as in the car during the commute home from work (possibly passing multiple fast-food outlets along the way), or at certain times of day such as after dinner, or when others around them are eating, having learned associations between these situations and eating.
Being in front of a TV or other screen can also prompt people to eat, eat unhealthy foods, or eat more than intended.
Making changes
While it’s not possible to change wider food environments or individual characteristics that affect susceptibility to food cues, you can try to tune into how and when you’re affected by food cues. Then you can restructure some aspects of your personal food environments, which can help if you’re working towards healthier eating goals.
Although both meals and snacks are important for overall diet quality, snacks are often unplanned, which means food environments and situations may have a greater impact on what we snack on.
Foods consumed as snacks are often sugary drinks, confectionery, chips and cakes. However, snacks can also be healthy (for example, fruits, nuts and seeds).
Try removing unhealthy foods, particularly packaged snacks, from the house, or not buying them in the first place. This means temptations are removed, which can be especially helpful for those who may be more susceptible to their food environment.
Planning social events around non-food activities can help reduce social influences on eating. For example, why not catch up with friends for a walk instead of lunch at a fast-food restaurant.
Creating certain rules and habits can reduce cues for eating. For example, not eating at your desk, in the car, or in front of the TV will, over time, lessen the effects of these situations as cues for eating.
You could also try keeping a food diary to identify what moods and emotions trigger eating. Once you’ve identified these triggers, develop a plan to help break these habits. Strategies may include doing another activity you enjoy such as going for a short walk or listening to music – anything that can help manage the mood or emotion where you would have typically reached for the fridge.
Write (and stick to) a grocery list and avoid shopping for food when hungry. Plan and prepare meals and snacks ahead of time so eating decisions are made in advance of situations where you might feel especially hungry or tired or be influenced by your food environment.

Fascia is an oft-forgotten part of the body—if something that is so ubiquitous and varied can be described as a single part. And yet, it arguably is—precisely because it is the connective tissue that holds everything else together, so by its nature, it’s ultimately a one-piece thing.
This “one-piece thing” is responsible for permitting us movement, and is also responsible for restricting our movement. As such, when it comes to mobility, we can stretch our muscles all day long and it won’t mean a thing if our fascia is stiff. And notably, fascia has a much slower turnover time (in terms of how quickly the body replaces it) than muscle, so fascia is almost always going to be the limiting factor.
Pilates instructor (with many certifications) Albini gives the reader the tools to loosen up that limiting factor. It’ll take time and consistency (it takes the body around 18 months to fully rebuild fascia, so that’s the timeframe for an ultimate “job done” to then just be maintained), but there are also some results to be enjoyed immediately, by virtue of myofascial release
In style, the book is half textbook, half workbook. She explains a lot of the anatomy and physiology of fascia (and does so very well). This book is, in this reviewer’s opinion, better than the usual go-to professional guidebook to fascia (i.e., for physiotherapists etc) that costs more than twice the price and is half as clear (the other book’s diagrams are unnecessarily abstract, the photos fuzzy, and the prose tedious). This book, in contrast, has very clear diagrams, hundreds of high-quality color photos, and excellent explanations that are aimed at the layperson, and/but aren’t afraid to get technical either; she just explains the technicalities well too.
The workbook side of things is a vast array of exercises to do, including for specific issues and to combat various lifestyle problems, as well as to just support general health and more mobility than most people think is possible for them.
Bottom line: if you’d like better mobility and have been neglecting your fascia (or have been a bit confused by it), this book is going to be your new best friend.

The Common Food Preservative Linked To Suicide

Firstly, we’ll note: no, this is not a statistical misrepresentation in the manner of “ice cream sales cause shark attacks”; it’s a link with a very clearly identifiable mechanism of action.

Now, with that said…
Food additives in general do not have a fabulous reputation for bringing good health. On the contrary, it is a generally held popular belief that “food additives are bad”.
This is not always true:
- Sometimes, food additives are health-neutral, like: Monosodium Glutamate: Sinless Flavor-Enhancer Or Terrible Health Risk?
- Sometimes, food additives are positively healthy, like: The Food Additive You Do Want ← this is about guar gum, a resistant starch that functions much like dietary fiber
…and of course, things being fortified with vitamins and minerals is usually a good thing too.
There are, however, definitely worse options, especially in the category of food preservatives specifically, such as:

- The Common Food Preservatives That Are Linked To Cancer
Today we’re going to talk some more about one of the food preservatives that’s common enough to have made it onto both of the above lists!
The sodium nitrite problem
Sodium nitrite (not to be confused with sodium nitrate, nitride, or nitratite, which are all different chemicals* despite having partially or entirely the same “ingredients”) is common food preservative, and you may find it on ingredient labels under its E-number, E250.
*We’ll speak on those briefly, though: sodium nitrate and its common mineral form nitratite are also not good to ingest (and also appear on the lists above), but are simply not our main focus here today, although we will touch on sodium nitrate too. As for sodium nitride, that’s also not good to ingest, but you won’t find that one in your food, as it’s very unstable. If you were somehow able to ingest some, then upon contact with the saliva of your mouth, it would already start reacting, to produce sodium hydroxide (bleach) and ammonium gas (also not a good thing to have in your mouth, much less your stomach).
Back to sodium nitrite…
Researchers (Dr. Amrita Ahluwalia et al.) did an analysis of postmortem cases, and found a substantial (and increasing!) number of suspected suicides involving nitrite poisoning (or sometimes sodium nitrate). Also featured in the report were close chemical cousins potassium nitrite and potassium nitrate.
The age range of those who died this way was 14–82 years. In terms of scale, 201 cases were submitted for laboratory assessment, with coroners permitting researchers to include 164 cases in the final analysis. Nitrite or nitrate poisoning was confirmed in 87% of these cases.
Further, Dr. Ahluwalia and her team note that the true number is probably higher because nitrite/nitrate testing is not routinely performed in every suspected suicide, and also that differences in testing practices between coroners and regions may also affect the apparent geographic distribution.
You may be wondering how much is sufficient to cause death. The lethal dose is 71 mg/kg, which is sufficient to cause fatal methemoglobinemia, characterized by systemic hypoxia (shortage of oxygen), metabolic acidosis (makes your blood acidic), and cyanosis (turning purple).
Paradoxically, that’s part of why it’s used as a preservative “fresh” meats, to preserve to red color, due to how a short series of chemical reactions result in a final reaction with myoglobin in the blood. The difference is that unlike you, already-dead meat is not using oxygen as it goes. Hence, with a sufficient dose of sodium nitrite, it stays red and you turn purple.

Samosa Spiced Surprise

You know what’s best about samosas? It’s not actually the fried pastry; that’s just what holds it together. If you were to try eating sheets of pastry alone, it would not be much fun. But, the spiced vegetable filling? Now we’re talking! So, this recipe takes what’s best about samosas, and makes them into healthy snack-sized patties.
You will need
- Extra virgin olive oil, or coconut oil (per your preference) for cooking
- 4 medium potatoes, boiled, peeled, and mashed
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 cup peas
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
- ½ cup garbanzo bean flour (chickpea flour, gram flour, whatever your supermarket calls it)
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped (substitute parsley if you have the soap gene)
- ¼ bulb garlic, minced
- 1 jalapeño pepper, chopped
- 1 tbsp ground cumin
- 2 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
Method
(we suggest you read everything at least once before doing anything)
1) Fry the onion until it is becoming soft and translucent (3–5 minutes).
2) Add the spices (the garlic, both kinds of pepper, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and the garam masala), stirring in well
3) Add the carrot and peas, stirring and cooking until just becoming soft (probably another 3–5 minutes, depending on the heat, how small you chopped the carrot, and whether the peas were frozen or fresh). Take it off the heat.
4) Mix the potato, chickpea flour, and cilantro in a bowl, and carefully add everything from the pan, mixing that in thoroughly too.
5) Shape into patties, and fry them on each side until browned and crispy.
6) Serve as part of a buffet, or perhaps as an appetizer—raita is a fine accompaniment option.

Apples vs Lemons – Which is Healthier?

Our Verdict
When comparing apples to lemons, we picked the lemons.
Why?
It’s a straightforward one today! Apples are great, but…
In terms of macros, apples have more carbs while lemons have more fiber and protein; a win for lemons, we say.
In the category of vitamins, apples have more of vitamin A, while lemons have more of vitamins B1, B5, B6, B9, C, and choline. A clear win for lemons, even before we consider the amount by which they contain more vitamin C (10x more than apples have).
When it comes to minerals, apples have a tiny touch more manganese, while lemons have a lot more calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.
In other considerations, apples are higher in polyphenols, so that is one thing in their favor, finally.
Still, adding up the sections makes it clear that if an apple a day keeps the doctor a way, then lemons could well be your doctor’s retirement plan. Of course, enjoy either or both though; diversity is best!
You may be thinking: “but I’m not going to eat lemons like I eat apples; this is an unfair comparison”
To that we say:
- you can if you want; nobody can stop you!
- apple and lemon can often go in similar things (drinks, desserts, etc)
