    First, know: Dr. Kaplan is an osteopath, and as such, will be mostly approaching things from that angle. That said, he is also board certified in other things too, including family medicine, so he’s by no means a “one-trick pony”, nor are there “when your only tool is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail” problems to be found here. Instead, the scope of the book is quite broad.

    Dr. Kaplan talks us through the diagnostic process that a doctor goes through when presented with a patient, what questions need to be asked and answered—and by this we mean the deeper technical questions, e.g. “what do these symptoms have in common”, and “what mechanism was at work when the pain become chronic”, not the very basic questions asked in the initial debriefing with the patient.

    He also asks such questions (and questions like these get chapters devoted to them) as “what if physical traumas build up”, and “what if physical and emotional pain influence each other”, and then examines how to interrupt the vicious cycles that lead to deterioration of one’s condition.

    The style of the book is very pop-science and often narrative in its presentation, giving lots of anecdotes to illustrate the principles. It’s a “sit down and read it cover-to-cover” book—or a chapter a day, whatever your preferred pace; the point is, it’s not a “dip directly to the part that answers your immediate question” book; it’s not a textbook or manual.

    Bottom line: a lot of this work is about prompting the reader to ask the right questions to get to where we need to be, but there are many illustrative possible conclusions and practical advices to be found and given too, making this a useful read if you and/or a loved one suffers from chronic pain.

    Firstly, for any wondering about the tooth remineralization, here you go:

    Now, to answer your question, we presume you are talking about something like this kit available on Amazon. In which case, some things to bear in mind:

    • This kind of thing is generally intended as a stop-gap measure until you see a dentist, because you cracked your tooth or lost a filling or something today, and will see the dentist next week, say.
    • This kind of thing is not what Dr. Michelle Jorgensen was talking about in another video* that we wrote about; rather, it is using a polymer filler to rebuild what is missing. The key difference is: this is using plastic, which is not what your teeth are made of, so it will never “take” as part of the tooth, as some biomimetic dentistry options can do.
    • Yes, this does also mean you are putting microplastics (because the powder is usually micronized polymer beads with zinc oxide, to which you add a liquid to create a paste that will set) in your mouth and quite possibly right next to an open blood supply depending on what’s damaged and whether capillaries were reaching it.
    • Because of the different material and application method, the adhesion is nothing like professional fillings (be they metal or resin), and thus the chances of it coming out again or so high that it’s more a question of when, rather than if.
    • If you have damage under there (as we presume you do in any scenario where you are using this), then if it’s not professionally cleaned before the filling goes in, then it can get infected, and (less dramatically, but still importantly) any extant decay can also get worse. We say “professionally”, because you will not be able to do an adequate job with your toothbrush, floss, etc at home, and even if you got dentist’s tools (which you can buy, by the way, but we don’t recommend), you will no more be able to do the same quality job as a dentist who has done that many times a day every day for the past 20 years, as buying expensive paintbrushes would make you able to restore a Renaissance painting without messing it up.

    *See: Dangers Of Root Canals And Crowns, & What To Do Instead ← what she recommends instead is biomimetic dentistry, which is also more prosaically called “conservative restorative dentistry”, i.e. it tries to conserve as much as possible, replace lost material on a like-for-like basis, and generally end up with a result that’s as close to natural as possible.

    In other words, the short answer to your question is “no, sorry, it isn’t and it won’t”

    However! A just like it’s good to have a first aid kit in the house even if it won’t do the same job as an ambulance crew, it can be good to have a tooth repair kit (essentially, a tooth first-aid kit) in the house, precisely to use it just as a stop-gap measure in the event that you one day crack a tooth or lose a filling or such, and don’t want to leave it open to all things in the meantime.

    (The results of this sort of kit are so not long-term in nature that it will be quick and easy for your dentist to remove it to do their own job once you get there)

    If in doubt, always see your dentist as soon as possible, as many things are a lot less work to treat now, than to treat later. Just, make sure to advocate for yourself and what you actually want/need, and don’t let them upsell you on something you didn’t come in for while you’re sitting in their chair—that’s a conversation to be had in advance with a clear head and no pressure (and nobody’s hands in your mouth)!

    Winter is coming, and with the cold weather comes respiratory viral infections, including influenza.

    So now’s a good time to protect yourself and others with the flu vaccine. It’s effective, free and widely available for many high-risk groups. Even if you don’t qualify for a free vaccine, it’s still recommended for you and your family.

    Here are five common questions you might have about the flu and the flu vaccine, and our answers.

    1. Is the flu really so bad?

    Most flu infections are relatively mild and uncomplicated – but not all. Experimental studies, where volunteers are infected with the flu virus or rhinovirus (a cause of the common cold), show the flu is associated with more intense symptoms that last longer.

    The flu weakens the natural defences of the lung. This can allow bacterial or fungal infection to become established, leading to secondary pneumonia.

    The flu is also thought to trigger heart attacks, stroke and other cardiovascular disease. In young children, it can trigger febrile seizures (childhood seizures caused by a sudden spike in body temperature).

    Uncommonly, the flu virus can directly infect body organs other than the lungs, leading to often severe and devastating diseases. These include infection of the brain (causing encephalitis) or heart (myocarditis).

    Frail, older people may have a limited capacity to cope with the stress of infection. So for them, the flu can trigger confusion (delirium), dehydration and cause other body systems to fail.

    The groups with the highest risk of flu-related hospitalisation are at each end of the age spectrum – young infants and children, and older people, particularly those with other chronic (long-term) illnesses.

    The flu is associated with some of the highest rates of hospitalisation compared with other common respiratory viruses, in children and adults.

    In 2025, Australia had an estimated 1,744 deaths involving the flu.

    2. Do kids really need a flu vaccine?

    Of half a million flu cases diagnosed in Australia in 2025, about two in five were diagnosed in those under 18 years. This results in thousands of children admitted to hospital with the flu each year.

    Although children with underlying health conditions are more likely to develop complicated influenza, over half of hospitalised cases occur in healthy children.

    According to one study, flu was involved in at least 29 children’s deaths in Australia in 2018–23, mostly as a direct cause. Around half of these children were healthy before they contracted the flu.

    Two out of three Australian children will avoid a flu infection or flu-related complications with a flu vaccine. That’s a vaccine effectiveness of about 65%.

    So a flu vaccine is recommended, every year for every Australian child from six months of age.

    3. Does the flu vaccine give you the flu?

    There are two types of flu vaccine.

    Injectable flu vaccines

    Injectable flu vaccines do not contain the flu virus, so cannot give you the flu. These vaccines contain purified haemagglutinin, a protein present on the surface of the flu virus. When you receive this vaccine, your immune system is “primed” to recognise it in the future, should it encounter the flu virus.

    Common symptoms after this type of flu vaccine include pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint pain. These symptoms can easily be mistaken for the flu, but they’re actually your body’s response to the haemagglutinin.

    Nasal spray vaccine

    This year, the flu vaccine delivered as a nasal spray (FluMist) became available in Australia. It’s registered for use in children 2–17 years, and is available for free in some jurisdictions for certain age groups.

    This is what’s called a live-attenuated vaccine. It contains a weakened “live” form of the flu strain that replicates only in the nose rather than deeper inside the body.

    After administration, more than half of children will have a blocked or runny nose, and around one in ten have a fever or headache. This occurs as the immune system responds locally, in the nose, to the weakened “live” flu strain.

    FluMist does not lead to infection of the lungs and lower airways. So it cannot cause the serious illness or complications we can see with a normal flu infection.

    4. Can the flu vaccine ‘overwhelm’ your immune system?

    Flu vaccines work by training the immune system on antigens – small, harmless components of the virus.

    We are exposed to hundreds of different antigens every day. For example, one study found healthy humans have demonstrable immune responses to hundreds of antigens in food. We are also constantly exposed to antigens on our skin and in our gut, and through natural infection. So a small dose of a few antigens in a flu vaccine is not able to “overload” or “overwhelm” the immune system.

    We routinely combine vaccines and vaccination. Sometimes that’s in a combination vaccine such as the combined diphtheria-tetanus-whooping cough vaccine or by administering more than one vaccine at a time. Our routine national childhood immunisation schedule usually recommends between two and four vaccines at a time. For adults, it’s recommended to have your flu vaccine at the same time as a COVID booster or the new vaccine against RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).

    There’s no evidence any of these methods “overload” or “overwhelm” your immune system.

    5. Is the flu vaccine safe if I’m pregnant?

    Pregnant women, their unborn babies and newborns are at high risk of flu complications. So women are recommended a flu vaccine at any stage of their pregnancy.

    Studies have examined the safety of flu vaccines in pregnancy. One systematic review compiled results from 40 studies. It found no evidence the injectable flu vaccine was associated with birth defects or stillbirth. Flu vaccines were however associated with lower rates of preterm birth and low birthweight.

    Flu vaccines are not generally effective in infants younger than six months. But antibodies transfer from the mother to the baby via the placenta following immunisation, providing protection against infection.

    An injectable flu vaccine in pregnancy provides protection to pregnant women, their unborn infant and their newborn baby.

    How A Diverse Gut Microbiome Can Make You Younger

    It’s well-known (to regular 10almonds readers, at the very least) that gut microbiome diversity is broadly a very good thing for health. What’s good for the gut is good for the heart, and what’s good for the heart is good for the brain, and also the gut is in many ways a hugely influential factor in our immune system, which includes not just when it comes to fighting pathogens, but also when it comes to healthy immune regulation, i.e. against immune dysfunction and chronic inflammation, which latter is bad for pretty much everything.

    However, a new study has found a link between gut health and aging; specifically, that the aging microbiome produces fewer metabolites that are needed for good health, resulting in a compounding effect of aging.

    Most interestingly, however, this relation has found to be causal the other way around, that is to say, it’s not just “when older, the gut doesn’t work so well”, but rather, “when given a better gut microbiome, effects of aging are reversed”.

    Caveat: this was a mouse study and it wasn’t all aspects of aging, but it was enough aspects of aging to be very worthy of note, and there’s no reason the same principles shouldn’t apply in humans:

    Maybe you can drink some calories, after all (if you do this with them)

    “Don’t drink your calories” is generally good advice; liquids are typically absorbed much more quickly than solids (increasing total caloric consumption, as well as the initial shock to the metabolism), and most sugary drinks (which absolutely includes pure fruit juice, by the way, as it has been stripped of fiber in the juicing process) produce an impressive spike in blood sugars, and thus insulin levels (both are bad things to spike).

    However, smoothies do better than juices, due to still having fiber in them. And, research has found, smoothies with seeds in flatten the blood sugar curve even more, likely due to the combination of fiber and fats:

    Wildfires have been raging in some parts of the US lately, and needless to say, these aren’t great for the health.
