Our Verdict
When comparing gooseberries to strawberries, we picked the gooseberries.
Why?
Both have their merits! But:
In terms of macros, gooseberries have more than 2x the fiber for slightly more carbs, winning this round.
In the category of vitamins, gooseberries have more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, B6, B7, and E, while strawberries have more of vitamins B3, B9, and C. That’s already a 7:3 win for gooseberries, even before we take into account that while most of those vitamin differences aren’t huge, gooseberries have 15x the vitamin A. So, however you want to look at it, a clear win for gooseberries.
Looking at minerals, gooseberries have more calcium, copper, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium, while strawberries have more iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. A modest 5:4 win for gooseberries here (and this time, no huge differences to add extra strength to the case).
In other considerations, strawberries have more polyphenols, especially anthocyanins, flavanols, and phenolic acids, but gooseberries are good in this regard too. Still, a point for strawberries finally in this round.
Adding up the sections makes for a clear overall win for gooseberries, but by all means enjoy either or both; diversity is good!
