
Walking Every Day? Add These 3 Things To Stay Stronger & More Mobile

Three ways to do it
Walking is great, but it is by its very nature repetitive, and that means it doesn’t exactly improve mobility (though it does help maintain it, within a small range), and nor does it really improve strength (though it does help maintain it, in certain muscles).
So, to mix it up a bit and get much greater benefits, consider:
- Build leg strength through a greater range of motion: comfortable walking on flat ground often doesn’t provide enough resistance to significantly challenge your leg muscles. Sit-to-stands are a simple way to add strength work to your routine. You can use your arms or a higher chair to make them easier, or add resistance to make them harder. Obviously, start where you need to, and progress where you can.
- Train balance & improve versatility: walking primarily involves forward movement, so adding sideways stepping challenges lateral stability and activates important hip muscles. Backwards walking or stepping further challenges balance, works the backs of your legs, and promotes hip mobility—but of course, please do it carefully! A good option is with a treadmill (so you know you’re not going to walk into anything while walking backwards), starting on a low speed setting and working up.
- Maintain hip and knee mobility: walking repeatedly uses a similar movement pattern and thus doesn’t adequately train movements such as bending, moving your leg sideways, or deeply bending your knees. Hip circles help maintain hip movement in multiple directions, while alternating heel lifts encourage greater knee bending and also work the backs of your thighs. Dr. Kuhn doesn’t mention this in the video, but dancing is great for this (as well as the other things we just talked about).

Brussels Sprouts vs Dandelion Greens – Which is Healthier?

Our Verdict
When comparing Brussels sprouts to dandelions, we picked the dandelions.
Why?
Both are great, and it’s such a strong pairing that we’re surprised we haven’t done this one before! But there is a winner, on balance:
In terms of macros, the sprouts have more fiber and protein, while the dandelions have more carbs, and/but all the numbers are quite close, so this is either a tie or the slenderest of nominal wins to dandelions.
In the category of vitamins, Brussels sprouts have more of vitamins B5, B9, and C, while dandelion greens have more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, E, and K, winning easily by a large margin.
Looking at minerals, the sprouts have more selenium, while dandelions have more calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium, winning convincingly again.
In other considerations, Brussels sprouts have sulforaphane while dandelion greens have more polyphenols, so this round’s either a tie or a nominal win to dandelions (because those are admittedly a lot of polyphenols).
Either way, adding up the sections makes for a clear overall win for dandelion greens, but by all means do enjoy either or both, as Brussels sprouts are certainly a top-tier food too!

No More Aches/Tripping When Walking: Strengthen This Oft-Neglected Muscle

Aches and pains while walking (in the feet, shins, and/or knees), as well as fatigue, are actually mostly about the oft-neglected tibialis anterior muscle.
Fortunately, it’s quite easy to strengthen if you know how:
All about the tib
The tibialis anterior is located at the front of the shin. It lifts the toes when walking, preventing trips and stumbles. Weakness in this muscle can cause fatigue as other muscles compensate, tripping as feet catch the floor, and/or general instability while walking.
Happily, there is an easy exercise to do that gives results quite quickly:
Steps:
- Stand with back and shoulders against a wall, feet 12 inches away.
- Slightly bend knees and keep posture relaxed.
- Lift toes off the ground, hold for a few seconds, then lower.
- Repeat for 10–15 reps.
To increase difficulty:
- Step further away from the wall for more ankle movement.
- Perform a “Tib Plank” by lifting hips off the wall and keeping knees straight.
It’s recommended to do 3 sets per day, with 1-minute rests between.

Red Bell Peppers vs Tomatoes – Which is Healthier?

Our Verdict
When comparing red bell peppers to tomatoes, we picked the peppers.
Why?
In terms of macronutrients, these two fruits-that-get-used-as-vegetables are similar in most respects; they’re mostly water, negligible protein and fat, similar amounts of carbs, even a similar carb breakdown (mostly fructose and glucose). One thing that does set them apart is that peppers* have about 2x the fiber, which difference results in peppers having the lower Glycemic Index—though tomatoes are quite low in GI too.
*for brevity we’re just going to write “peppers”, but we are still talking about sweet red bell peppers throughout. This is important, as different color peppers have different nutrient profiles.
In the category of vitamins, peppers have much more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C, and E. In contrast, tomatoes have more vitamin K. An easy win for peppers.
When it comes to minerals, the margins are narrower, but peppers have more iron, zinc, and selenium, while tomatoes have more calcium and copper. They’re approximately equal on other minerals they both contain, making this category a slight (3:2) win for peppers.
As for phytochemical benefits, both are good sources of lycopene (both better when cooked) and other carotenes (for example lutein), and both have an array of assorted flavonoids.
All in all, a win for peppers, but both are great!

When comparing artichoke to eggplant, we picked the artichoke.
Why?
It was quite one-sided today!
In terms of macros, artichoke has nearly 2x the fiber and carbs, and more than 3x the protein, making it the most nutrient-dense option by far in this round.
In the category of vitamins, artichoke has more of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, C, and K, while eggplant boasts only (slightly) more vitamin E, yielding a 9:1 victory for artichoke.
Looking at minerals next, artichoke has more calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc, while eggplant boasts only (slightly) more selenium, giving an 8:1 victory for artichoke in this round.
In other considerations, artichoke is much higher in polyphenols, so that’s another point in its favor.
Adding up the sections is barely needed today; it’s a clear total win for artichoke. Still, do enjoy either or both (perhaps together; ratatouille is a great option to use them both and more), as diversity is good!

When comparing chickpeas to edamame, we picked the edamame.
Why?
Both are great! But there are some important nutritional differences:
In terms of macros, chickpeas have slightly more fiber and 3x the carbs, while edamame has slightly more protein. We’ll call this category a tie, but subjectively you could swing it either way, depending on how you feel about the carbs, since they’re the main difference.
In the category of vitamins, chickpeas have slightly more vitamin B6, while edamame has a lot more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B7, B9, C, E, K, and choline. A very clear win for edamame here.
When it comes to minerals, chickpeas have more iron, selenium, and zinc, while edamame has more calcium, magnesium, and potassium. That’s a 3:3 tie, and they’re equal in the other minerals they both contain, so this round’s indeed tied.

❝How much evidence is there behind the longevity-related benefit related to spermidine, and more specifically, does it cause autophagy?❞
A short and simple answer to the latter question: yes, it does:
Spermidine: a physiological autophagy inducer acting as an anti-aging vitamin in humans?
For anyone wondering what autophagy is: it’s when old cells are broken down and consumed by the body to make new ones. Doing this earlier rather than later means that the genetic material is not yet so degraded when it is copied, and so the resultant new cell(s) will be “younger” than if the previous cell(s) had been broken down and recycled when older.
Indeed, we have written previously about senolytic supplements such as fisetin, which specialize in killing senescent (aging) cells earlier:

As for spermidine and longevity, because of its autophagy-inducing properties, it’s considered a caloric restriction mimetic, that is to say, it has the same effect on a cellular level as caloric restriction. And yes, while it’s not an approach we regularly recommend here (usually preferring intermittent fasting as a CR-mimetic), caloric restriction is a way to fight aging:

As for how spermidine achieves similarly:

However! Both of the scientific papers on spermidine use in humans that we’ve cited so far today have conflict of interests statements made with regard to the funding of the studies, which means there could be some publication bias.
To that end, let’s look at a less glamorous study (e.g. no “in humans” in the title because, like most longevity studies, it’s with non-human animals with naturally short lifespans such as mice and rats), like this one that finds it to be both cardioprotective and neuroprotective and having many anti-aging benefits mediated by inducing autophagy:

(the polyamines in question are spermidine and putrescine, which latter is a similar polyamine)
Lastly, let’s answer a few likely related questions, so that you don’t have to Google them:
Does spermidine come from sperm?
Amongst other places (including some foods, which we’ll come to in a moment), yes, spermidine is normally found in semen (in fact, it’s partly responsible for the normal smell, though other factors influence the overall scent, such as diet, hormones, and other lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol use etc) and that is how/where it was first identified.
Does that mean that consuming semen is good for longevity?
Aside from the health benefits of a healthy sex life… No, not really. Semen does contain spermidine (as discussed) as well as some important minerals, but you’d need to consume approximately 1 cup of semen to get the equivalent spermidine you’d get from 1 tbsp of edamame (young soy) beans.
Unless your lifestyle is rather more exciting than this writer’s, it’s a lot easier to get 1 tbsp of edamame beans than 1 cup of semen.
Here are how some top foods stack up, by the way—we admittedly cherry-picked from the near top of the list, but wheatgerm is an even better source, with cheddar cheese and mushrooms (it was shiitake in the study) coming after soy:

Alternatively, if you prefer to just take it in supplement form, here’s an example product on Amazon, giving 5mg per capsule (which is almost as much as the 1 cup of semen or 1 tbsp of edamame that we mentioned earlier).
