Raise your standards

If you find your push-ups represented in any of the first few shown here (the worm, the dogger, the head-bobber, and so forth), just know, you can have better.

If โ˜๏ธ you treat push-ups as a skill by slowing things down, checking your ego, and training precision instead of chasing more reps with poor form.

The first (and perhaps most frightening) step is…

Film your push-ups: record yourself so you can spot form leaks, adjust cues in real time, and track visible progress as your technique improves. You don’t have to show it to anyone ๐Ÿ™‚

As for what to do with your body, try these:

  • Eccentric push-ups: lower yourself slowly for about five seconds from the hardest variation you can control to build strength where youโ€™re strongest, and rehearse perfect alignment from your head to your heels.
  • Bottom-up push-ups: start from the bottom with everything braced and push the ground away as one unit to train tension, core control, and clean transitions without your hips shooting up.
  • Cluster sets: perform small clusters of one to three high-quality reps of a harder variation with short rests, so you progress the movement instead of getting stuck at an easier modification.
  • Push-up isometric holds: pause at your weakest points to strengthen those exact positions, improve muscle recruitment, and build rock-solid stability through your core and shoulders.

Lastly, one final secret weapon is prehab: include mobility, activation, and scapular control work in every warm-up, so your joints stay happy and the right muscles fire together during every push-up.
