
Gooseberries vs Lemon – Which is Healthier?

Our Verdict
When comparing gooseberries to lemons, we picked the gooseberries.
Why?
Both have their merits, but ultimately, it wasn’t close:
In terms of macros, gooseberries have notably more fiber, for about the same carbs and protein, winning this round.
In the category of vitamins, gooseberries have more of vitamins A, B2, B3, B5, and E, while lemons have more of vitamins B9 and C, yielding a 5:2 win for gooseberries.
Looking at minerals, gooseberries have more copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc, while lemons have more iron, so that’s a clear 7:1 victory for gooseberries here.
In other considerations, gooseberries have more polyphenols, so that’s another point in their favor.
Adding up the sections makes for an overwhelming overall win for gooseberries, but by all means do enjoy either or both, as diversity is best!

Chlorella vulgaris, henceforth “chlorella”, is a simple green algae that has a lot of health benefits.
Note: most of the studies here are for Chlorella vulgaris specifically. However, some are for other species of the Chlorella genus, of which Chlorella vulgaris is by far the most common, hence the name (vulgaris = common). The relevant phytochemical properties appear to be the same regardless.
Superfood
While people generally take it as a supplement rather than a food item in any kind of bulk, it is more than 50% protein and contains all 9 essential amino acids.
As you might expect of a green superfood, it’s also full of many antioxidants, most of them carotenoids, and these pack a punch, for example against cancer:
It also has a lot of vitamins and minerals, and even omega-3.

Heart healthy

May remove heavy metals
We’re going with “may” for this one as we could only find animal studies so far (probably because most humans don’t have megadoses of heavy metals in them, which makes testing harder).
Here’s an example animal study, though:
Enhanced elimination of tissue methyl mercury in [Chlorella]-fed mice
Immunostimulant
This one’s clearer, for example in this 8-week study (with humans) that found…
❝Serum concentrations of interferon-γ (p<0.05) and interleukin-1β (p<0.001) significantly increased and that of interleukin-12 (p<0.1) tended to increase in the Chlorella group.
The increments of these cytokines after the intervention were significantly bigger in the Chlorella group than those in the placebo group. In addition, NK cell activities (%) were significantly increased in Chlorella group, but not in Placebo group.
The increments of NK cell activities (%) were also significantly bigger in the Chlorella group than the placebo group.
Additionally, changed levels of NK cell activity were positively correlated with those of serum interleukin-1β (r=0.280, p=0.047) and interferon-γ (r=0.271, p<0.005).❞
tl;dr = it boosts numerous different kinds of immune cells
PS, if you click though to the study, you may be momentarily alarmed by the first paragraph of the abstract that says “However, there were no direct evidences for the effect of Chlorella supplementation on immune/inflammation response in healthy humans“
this is from the “Background” section of the abstract, so what they are saying is “before we did this study, nobody had done this yet”.
So, be assured that the results are worthwhile and compelling.
Is it safe?
Based on the studies, it has a good safety profile. However, as it boosts the immune system, you may want to check with your doctor if you have an autoimmune disorder, and/or you are on immunosuppressants.
And in general, of course always check with your doctor/pharmacist if unsure about any potential drug interactions.

At The Heart Of Women’s Health

A woman’s heart is a particular thing
For the longest time (and still to a large degree now), “women’s health” is assumed to refer to the health of organs found under a bikini. But there’s a lot more to it than that. We are whole people, with such things as brains and hearts and more.
Today (Valentine’s Day!) we’re focusing on the heart.
A quick recap:

…but that’s fairly common knowledge at least amongst those who are attentive to such things, whereas…
…is much less common knowledge, especially with the ways statins are more likely to make things worse for a lot of women (not all though; see the article for some nuance about that).

A question:
Why are women twice as likely to die from a heart attack as their age-equivalent male peers? Women develop heart disease later, but die from it sooner. Why is that?
That’s been a question scientists have been asking (and tentatively answering, as scientists do—hypotheses, theories, conclusions even sometimes) for 20 years now. Likely contributing factors include:
- A lack of public knowledge of the different symptoms
- A lack of confidence of bystanders to perform CPR on a woman
- A lack of public knowledge (including amongst prescribers) about the sex-related differences for statins
- A lack of women in cardiology, comparatively.
- A lack of attention to it, simply. Men get heart disease earlier, so it’s thought of as a “man thing”, by health providers as much as by individuals. Men get more regular cardiovascular check-ups, women get a mammogram and go.
Statistically, women are much more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer:
- Breast cancer kills around 0.02% of us.
- Heart disease kills one in three.
And yet…
❝In a nationwide survey, only 22% of primary care doctors and 42% of cardiologists said they feel extremely well prepared to assess cardiovascular risks in women.
We are lagging in implementing risk prevention guidelines for women.
A lot of women are being told to just watch their cholesterol levels and see their doctor in a year. That’s a year of delayed care.❞

The “bystanders less likely to feel confident performing CPR on a woman” aspect may be helped by the deployment of new automatic external defibrillator, that works from four sides instead of one.

What Your Tongue Says About Your Health

The answers may be on the tip of your tongue
Things to watch out for:
- Red, smooth tongue (glossitis): can indicate vitamin B12 deficiency, often due to pernicious anemia.
- Touching tongue to nose (Gorlin sign): may be a sign of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or macroglossia, but is also a rare normal variant in <10% of people.
- Teeth imprints on tongue sides (macroglossia): suggests a large tongue, which can be due to allergies, hypothyroidism, acromegaly, amyloidosis, or congenital causes.
- High Mallampati score (visible mouth structures): indicates a potentially difficult airway and an increased risk of sleep apnea.
- White coating on tongue: may be due to oral thrush, leukoplakia, lichen planus, or hairy leukoplakia (often linked to HIV).
- Reduced tongue mobility: can be an early sign of a neurological issue or a lesion.
- Color changes in tongue from cold (Raynaud’s phenomenon): rare, but may be the first symptom of scleroderma or result from radiation treatment.
- Strawberry tongue: seen in scarlet fever or Kawasaki disease, typically affecting children.
- Geographic tongue: harmless condition possibly related to psoriasis or asthma, with unknown cause.
- Dry tongue: may be a sign of Sjogren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease affecting saliva production—can also be a side effect of some medications (read labels / check with your pharmacist).
- Hairy tongue: caused by keratin buildup, often worsened by smoking, antibiotics, poor oral hygiene, or ICU stays.
- Canker sores (aphthous ulcers): painful but benign; recurrent sores may suggest underlying conditions and warrant further evaluation.
- Persistent ulcer or lump: may signal oral cancer, especially with smoking or HPV exposure; needs prompt medical attention.

Beans, chickpeas, and lentils are well-established super-healthy foods, but they’re often not a lot of people’s favorite. And why? Usually because of unhappy associations with boring dishes that can barely be called dishes.
This book raises the bar for pulses of various kinds, and not only provides recipes (180 of them) but also guidelines on principles, tips and tricks, what works and what doesn’t, what makes things better or worse, perfect partners, sprouting, and more.
The recipes themselves are not all vegan, nor even all vegetarian, but the beans are the star throughout. For those who are vegan or vegetarian, it’s easy to make substitutions, not least of all because the author is generous with “try this instead of that” and “consider also” suggestions, to help us tailor each dish to our personal preferences, and even the desired vibe of a given meal.
The dishes are neither overly simplistic (it’s not a student survival cookbook, by any means) nor overly complicated; rather, enough is done to make each dish invitingly tasty, and nothing extraneous or pretentious is added for the sake of being fancy. This is about delicious home cooking, nothing more nor less.
If the book has a weakness, it’s that visual learners will feel the absence of pictures for many recipes. But, the text is clear, the instructions are easy to follow, and a photo for each dish would probably have doubled the cost of the book, at least, while halving the number of recipes.
Bottom line: if you’d like to get more beans and other pulses in your diet, but are unsure how to make it exciting, this is an excellent option.

Avocado vs Blueberries – Which is Healthier?

Our Verdict
When comparing avocado to blueberries, we picked the avocado.
Why?
These two fruits aren’t as similar as some of the comparisons we’ve made—we often go for “can be used in the same way culinarily” comparisons. But! They are both fruits and popularly in the “superfood” category, so it’s interesting to consider. If you’re wondering which to put in your smoothie, a very respectable answer is “both”, but since in this contest that can only be one winner, let’s have at it…
In terms of macros, avocado has more protein, (healthy!) fat, and fiber, while blueberries have more carbs. An easy win for avocado here, unless you’re on a calorie-controlled diet perhaps, since avocado is also higher in those. About that fat; it’s mostly monounsaturated, with some polyunsaturated and saturated, and is famously a good source of omega-3 in the form of ALA.
In the category of vitamins, avocado has more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, C, E, and K, while blueberries are not higher in any vitamins. So, not a tricky decision here.
When it comes to minerals, avocado has more calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc, while blueberries are higher in manganese. Another easy win for avocados.
In other considerations, let’s talk polyphenols. We’d be here all day if we listed them all, but in total, blueberries have about 1193x the polyphenol content that avocados do. Blueberries got the reputation for antioxidant properties for a reason; it is well-deserved!
Adding up the sections makes for a clear overall win for avocado, but by all means do enjoy either or both, as diversity is best, and blueberries are great in their own right too!

Working Smarter < Working Brighter!

When it comes to working smarter, not harder, there’s plenty of advice and honestly, it’s mostly quite sensible. For example:

But, as standards of productivity rise, the goalposts get moved too, and the treadmill just keeps on going…
- 49% of entrepreneurs say they’ve struggled with some kind of mental illness
- Millennial women are one of the workforce groups at the highest risk of anxiety
- About 7 in 10 millennials experience burnout at work
Not that these things are confined to Millennials, by any stretch, but Millennials make up a huge portion of working people. Ideally, this age group should be able to bring the best of both worlds to the workplace by combining years of experience with youthful energy.
So clearly something is going wrong; the question is: what can be done about it?
Workers of the World, Unwind
A knee-jerk response might be “work to rule”—a tactic long-used by disgruntled exploited workers to do no more than the absolute minimum required to not get fired. And it’s arguably better for them than breaking themselves at work, but that’s not exactly enriching, is it?

- Rest is work when it’s needed
This is not one of those “what workers really want is not more pay, it’s beanbags” things, by the way (but if you want a beanbag, then by all means, get yourself a beanbag).
It’s about making time to rest, it’s about having the things that make you feel good while you’re working, and making sure you can enjoy working. You’re going to spend a lot of your life doing it; you might as well enjoy it.

And no, they don’t wish they’d “worked smarter, not harder”. They wish (also in the above list, in fact) that they’d had the courage to live a life more true to themselves.
You can do that in your work. Whatever your work is. And if your work doesn’t permit that (be it the evil boss trope, or even that you are the boss and your line of work just doesn’t work that way), time to change that up. Stop focusing on what you can’t do, and look for what you can do.
Spoiler: you can have a blast just trying things out!
That doesn’t mean you should quit your job, or replace your PC with a Playstation, or whatever.
It just means that you deserve comfort and happiness while working, and around your work!

And pssst, if you’re a business-owner who is thinking “but I have quotas to meet”, your customers are going to love your staff being happier, and will enjoy their interactions with your company much more. Or if your staff aren’t customer-facing, then still, they’ll work better when they enjoy doing it. This isn’t rocket science, but all too many companies give a cursory nod to it before proceeding to ignore it for the rest of the life of the company.
