Our Verdict

When comparing arugula to dandelion greens, we picked the dandelion greens.

Why?

Will anything unseat dandelions from their place as the queen of the greens? Not today, that’s for sure:

In terms of macros, dandelion greens have more than 2x the fiber, which is significant, as well as more carbs and protein, making it the more nutritionally-dense choice all around macros-wise, though really, it’s the fiber that wins it for them here.

In the category of vitamins, arugula has more of vitamins B5 and B9, while dandelion greens have more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, C, E, and K, all by generous margins too. An easy win for dandelion greens in this round.

When it comes to minerals, arugula has more magnesium and zinc, while dandelions have more calcium, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium. Another win for dandelion greens.

One more category, polyphenols. We’d be here until next week if we listed all the polyphenols that dandelion greens have, but suffice it to say, dandelion greens have a total of 385.55mg/100g polyphenols, while arugula has a total of 0.10mg/100g polyphenols. Easy arithmetic today: dandelions have more than 3855.5x the polyphenol content that garden cress does.

So, “eat leafy greens” is great advice, but they are definitely not all created equal!

Let us take this moment to exhort: if you have any space at home where you can grow dandelions, grow them! They’re great for pollinators, too 🐝💕

    Cognitive Enhancement Without Drugs

    Elizabeth Ricker stands before the tranquil ocean, contemplating the vast expanse before her.

    This is Elizabeth Ricker. She’s a Harvard-and-MIT-trained neuroscientist and researcher, who now runs the “Citizen Science” DIY-neurohacking organization, NeuroEducate.

    Sounds fun! What’s it about?

    The philosophy that spurs on her research and practice can be summed up as follows:

    ❝I’m not going to leave my brain up to my doctor or [anyone else]… My brain is my own responsibility, and I’m going to do the best that I can to optimize it❞

    Her goal is not just to optimize her own brain though; she wants to make the science accessible to everyone.

    What’s this about Citizen Science?

    Citizen Science” is the idea that while there’s definitely an important role in society for career academics, science itself should be accessible to all. And, not just the conclusions, but the process too.

    This can take the form of huge experiments, often facilitated these days by apps where we opt-in to allow our health metrics (for example) to be collated with many thousands of others, for science. It can also involve such things as we talked about recently, getting our own raw genetic data and “running the numbers” at home to get far more comprehensive and direct information than the genetic testing company would ever provide us.

    For Ricker, her focus is on the neuroscience side of biohacking, thus, neurohacking.

    I’m ready to hack my brain! Do I need a drill?

    Happily not! Although… Bone drills for the skull are very convenient instruments that make it quite hard to go wrong even with minimal training. The drill bit has a little step/ledge partway down, which means you can only drill through the thickness of the skull itself, before the bone meeting the wider part of the bit stops you from accidentally drilling into the brain. Still, please don’t do this at home.

    What you can do at home is a different kind of self-experimentation…

    If you want to consider which things are genuinely resulting in cognitive enhancement and which things are not, you need to approach the matter like a scientist. That means going about it in an organized fashion, and recording results.

    There are several ways cognitive enhancement can be measured, including:

    • Learning and memory
    • Executive function
    • Emotional regulation
    • Creative intelligence

    Let’s look at each of them, and what can be done. We don’t have a lot of room here; we’re a newsletter not a book, but we’ll cover one of Ricker’s approaches for each:

    Learning and memory

    This one’s easy. We’re going to leverage neuroplasticity (neurons that fire together, wire together!) by simple practice, and introduce an extra element to go alongside your recall. Perhaps a scent, or a certain item of clothing. Tell yourself that clinical studies have shown that this will boost your recall. It’s true, but that’s not what’s important; what’s important is that you believe it, and bring the placebo effect to bear on your endeavors.

    Executive function

    Executive function is the aspect of your brain that tells the other parts how to work, when to work, and when to stop working. If you’ve ever spent 30 minutes thinking “I need to get up” but you were stuck in scrolling social media, that was executive dysfunction.

    This can be trained using the Stroop Color and Word Test, which shows you words, specifically the names of colors, which will themselves be colored, but not necessarily in the color the word pertains to. So for example, you might be shown the word “red”, colored green. Your task is to declare either the color of the word only, ignoring the word itself, or the meaning of the word only, ignoring its appearance. It can be quite challenging, but you’ll get better quite quickly:

    Emotional Regulation

    This is the ability to not blow up angrily at the person with whom you need to be diplomatic, or to refrain from laughing when you thought of something funny in a sombre situation.

    It’s an important part of cognitive function, and success or failure can have quite far-reaching consequences in life. And, it can be trained too.

    There’s no online widget for this one, but: when and if you’re in a position to safely* do so, think about something that normally triggers a strong unwanted emotional reaction. It doesn’t have to be something life-shattering, but just something that you feel in some way bad about. Hold this in your mind, sit with it, and practice mindfulness. The idea is to be able to hold the unpleasant idea in your mind, without becoming reactive to it, or escaping to more pleasant distractions. Build this up.

    *if you perchance have PTSD, C-PTSD, or an emotional regulation disorder, you might want to talk this one through with a qualified professional first.

    Creative Intelligence

    Another important cognitive skill, and again, one that can be cultivated and grown.

    The trick here is volume. A good, repeatable test is to think of a common object (e.g. a rock, a towel, a banana) and, within a time constraint (such as 15 minutes) list how many uses you can think of for that item.

    Writer’s storytime: once upon a time, I was sorting through an inventory of medical equipment with a colleague, and suggested throwing out our old arterial clamps, as we had newer, better ones—in abundance. My colleague didn’t want to part with them, so I challenged him “Give me one use for these, something we could in some possible world use them for that the new clamps don’t do better, and we’ll keep them”. He said “Thumbscrews”, and I threw my hands up in defeat, saying “Fine!”, as he had technically fulfilled my condition.

    What’s the hack to improve this one? Just more volume. Creativity, as it turns out, isn’t something we can expend—like a muscle, it grows the more we use it. And because the above test is repeatable (with different objects), you can track your progress.

    And if you feel like using your grown creative muscle to write/paint/compose/etc your magnum opus, great! Or if you just want to apply it to the problem-solving of everyday life, also great!

    In summary…

    Our brain is a wonderful organ with many functions. Society expects us to lose these as we get older, but the simple, scientific truth is that we can not only maintain our cognitive function, but also enhance and grow it as we go.

  • The China Study – by Dr. T Colin Campbell and Dr. Thomas M. Campbell

    This is not the newest book we’ve reviewed (originally published 2005; this revised and expanded edition 2016), but it is a seminal one.

    You’ve probably heard it referenced, and maybe you’ve wondered what the fuss is about. Now you can know!

    The titular study itself was huge. We tend to think “oh there was one study” and look to discount it, but it literally looked at the population of China. That’s a large study.

    And because China is relatively ethnically homogenous, especially per region, it was easier to isolate what dietary factors made what differences to health. Of course, that did also create a limitation: follow-up studies would be needed to see if the results were the same for non-Chinese people. But even for the rest of us (this reviewer is not Chinese), it already pointed science in the right direction. And sure enough, smaller follow-up studies elsewhere found the same.

    But enough about the research; what about the book? This is a book review, not a research review, after all.

    The book itself is easy for a lay reader to understand. It explains how the study was conducted (no small feat), and how the data was examined. It also discusses the results, and the conclusions drawn from those results.

    In light of all this, it also offers simple actionable advices, on how to eat to avoid disease in general, and cancer in particular. In especially that latter case, one take-home conclusion was: get more of your protein from plants for a big reduction in cancer risk, for example.

    Bottom line: this book is an incredible blend of “comprehensive” and “readable” that we don’t often find in the same book! It contains not just a lot of science, but also an insight into how the science works, on a research level. And, of course, its results and conclusions have strong implications for all our lives.

    Chocolate & Health: Fact or Fiction?

    “Chocolate Is Good For The Heart”

    “When making chocolate chip cookies, you don’t measure using cups, you measure by heart”

    …but how good is chocolate when it comes to heart health?

    First, what is heart health?

    A healthy heart typically has a low resting pulse rate and a strong, steady beat. This is affected strongly by exercise habits, and diet plays only a support role (can’t exercise without energy from food!).

    It is also important to have blood pressure within a healthy range (with high blood pressure being a more common problem than low, so things that lower blood pressure are generally considered good).

    • Flavanols, flavonoids, and polyphenols in chocolate contribute to lower blood pressure
    • Dark chocolate is best for these, as milk chocolate contains much less cocoa solids and more unhelpful fats
    • White chocolate contains no cocoa solids and is useless for this
    • Some of the fats in most commercial chocolate can contribute to atherosclerosis which raises blood pressure and ultimately can cause heart attacks.
    • If you’re diabetic, you will probably not get the usual heart-related benefits from chocolate (sorry)

    The Verdict: dark chocolate, in moderation, can support good heart health.

    “Chocolate Is Good For The Brain”

    Chocolate has been considered a “brain food”… why?

    • The brain uses more calories than any other organ (chocolate has many calories)
    • The heart benefits we listed above mean improved blood flow—including to your brain
    • Chocolate contains phenylethylamine, a powerful chemical that has a similar effect to amphetamines… But it’s metabolized in digestion and never makes it to the central nervous system (so basically, this one’s a miss; we had a good run with the other two, though!)

    The Verdict: dark chocolate, in moderation, can support good brain health

    “Chocolate Is An Aphrodisiac”

    “If chocolate be the food of love, pass me that cocoa; I’m starving”

    Most excitingly, chocolate contains phenylethylamine, the “molecule of love” or, more accurately, lust. It has an effect similar to amphetamines, and while we can synthesize it in the body, we can also get it from certain foods. But…

    Our body is so keen to get it that most of it is metabolized directly during digestion and doesn’t make it to the brain. Also, chocolate is not as good a source as cabbage—do with that information what you will!

    However!

    Chocolate contains theobromine and small amounts of caffeine, both stimulants and both generally likely to improve mood; it also contains flavonoids which in turn stimulate production of nitric oxide, which is a relaxant. All in all, things that are convivial to having a good time.

    On the other hand…

    That relaxation comes specifically with a reduction in blood pressure—something typically considered good for the health for most people most of the time… but that means lowering blood pressure in all parts of your body, which could be the opposite of what you want in intimate moments.

    Chocolate also contains zinc, which is essential for hormonal health for most people—the body uses it to produce testosterone and estrogen, respectively. Zinc supplements are popularly sold to those wishing to have more energy in general and good hormonal health in particular, and rightly so. However…

    This approach requires long-term supplementation—you can’t just pop a zinc tablet / bar of chocolate / almond before bed and expect immediate results. And if your daily zinc supplementation takes the form of a 3.5oz (100g) bar of chocolate, then you may find it has more effects on your health, and not all of them good!

    The Verdict: dark chocolate, in moderation, may promote “the mood”, but could be a double-edged sword when it comes to “the ability”.

    “Chocolate Is Good During Menstruation”

    The popular wisdom goes that chocolate is rich in iron (of which more is needed during menstruation), and indeed, if you eat 7oz (150g) of dark chocolate made with 85% cocoa, you’ll get a daily a dose of iron (…and nearly 1,000 calories).

    More bang-for-buck dietary sources of iron include chickpeas and broccoli, but for some mysterious reason, these are not as commonly reported as popular cravings.

    The real explanation for chocolate cravings is more likely that eating chocolate—a food high in sugar and fat along with a chemical bombardment of more specialized “hey, it’s OK, you can relax now” molecules (flavanols/flavonoids, polyphenols, phenylamines, even phenylethylamine, etc) gives a simultaneous dopamine kick (the body’s main “reward” chemical) with a whole-body physiological relaxation… so, little wonder we might crave it in times of stress and discomfort!

    The Verdict: it helps, not because it serves a special nutritional purpose, but rather, because the experience of eating chocolate makes us feel good.

    Fun fact: Tiramisu (this writer’s favorite dessert) is literally Italian for “pick-me-up”

  • Do This For 10 Days To Unlock Stiff Joints

    Contrary to the video thumbnail, this doesn’t require squats:

    Easy does it

    1. Sit-back hip opener: start on all fours (on your bed is fine, no need for discomfort on the floor) with your knees under your hips and the insides of your feet flat against the bed. Widen your knees slightly, then slowly sit your hips backwards as far as you can, then return to neutral. If it feels easy, widen your knees further and lie your feet flatter. This mobilizes your hips into flexion and external rotation, easing stiffness and supporting better joint movement. You can alternate between sitting backwards and leaning forwards to stretch both sides of your hip capsule. Do this for about one to two minutes, once or twice a day.
    2. Seated hip rotations: sit on a few folded towels against a backrest with your knees bent and feet flat. Let both legs drop to one side—one knee moves outwards while the other crosses inwards—then rotate to the opposite side. Keep your buttocks on the towels and move only from your hips. Remove the towels one by one as you improve. This improves hip capsule flexibility and strengthens your hip rotators. Do about one minute in the morning and one minute in the evening for 10 days.
    3. Ankle mobilization: place a chair with its back against a wall and rest one foot flat on the seat, heel down. With both hands on your knee, gently push your knee forwards over your toes without lifting your heel. You can move in and out for dynamic mobilisation or hold for 30 seconds as a static stretch. For a deeper stretch, hold the back of the chair and pull yourself closer. This improves ankle dorsiflexion, helping with walking, squatting, and reducing lower-body tightness.

  • Carrot vs Turnip – Which is Healthier?

    Our Verdict

    When comparing carrots to turnips, we picked the carrots.

    Why?

    In terms of macros, carrots have 50% more fiber, 50% more carbs, and approximately the same protein. All in all, that makes carrots the “more plant per plant” option in the macros category and thus the winner in this first round.

    In the category of vitamins, carrots have more of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, E, and K, scoring especially highly in vitamins A, E, and K, while turnips are higher only in vitamin C. All in all, a clear second-round win for carrots.

    Looking at minerals, carrots have more calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and potassium, while turnips have more copper, selenium, and zinc, yielding a 5:3 win for carrots in this round.

    In other considerations, they’re about equal on polyphenols, but carrots are (shocking nobody) higher in carotenoids, and score an extra point here.

    Adding up the sections makes for a clear overall win for carrots, but by all means do enjoy either or both, as diversity is good!

  • Huntington’s Disease Successfully Treated For First Time!

    Good news for those affected by Huntington’s Disease

    Huntington’s disease is hereditary, and so determinably so that it’s often used in high school biology as an easy example of using a punnet square to determine inheritance; if one parent has the gene, you have a 50% chance of having it too. Symptoms usually show up in early adulthood, and once symptoms do appear, life expectancy is 15–20 years.

    Because of increasing problems with muscle coordination (including autonomic functions like respiration and circulation) and cognitive decline, the top three Huntington’s-related causes of death currently are:

    1. Pneumonia (more likely to accidentally inhale food/drink and can’t clear the lungs adequately)
    2. Heart disease (heart not pumping correctly, and vascular tone is not great either)
    3. Suicide (brain not doing well, and also quality of life is increasingly poor)

    This new treatment developed by Dr. Sarah Tabrizi et al. is a single-dose gene therapy; a modified virus inserts DNA into neurons, which then produce microRNA to silence the faulty Huntington gene, reducing toxic protein levels.

    In the first trials (n=29), three-year data is showing major slowing of symptoms and reduced brain cell loss, confirmed by lower neurofilament levels in spinal fluid, and a 75% reduction in disease progression after gene therapy, meaning that while it’s not a complete cure, degeneration that would normally take a certain amount of time will now take 4x as long.

    In practical terms, if we remember that the life expectancy without treatment is 15–20 years, multiplying that by 4 makes a huge difference, given that symptoms usually show up in one’s 20s or 30s, as it moves the prognosis of Huntington’s-related death from age 35–50 or so, to to age 80–100 or so. In other words, it restores normal lifespan, and greatly improves quality of life along the way.

    Indeed, some patients in the study have now returned to work, and/or left wheelchairs behind them, such has been their recovery.

    Good news for those affected by Multiple Sclerosis

    This is also huge, and surprisingly easy, and a lot more accessible than the gene therapy in the previous story.

    While scientists are still not really sure what actually causes MS or how it happens, they do know it has to do with neuronal demyelination, or “the protective sheathes around your neurons get degraded”—the biological equivalent of electrical wires getting stripped of the plastic coating, and thus short-circuiting or getting broken.

    This new study found that pairing the diabetes drug metformin with the antihistamine clemastine shows potential to repair myelin damage in MS.

    How it works: clemastine reactivates myelin repair, while metformin appears to enhance that effect. Together, they may protect against progressive nerve damage, though (alas) dead nerves cannot be regenerated this way.

    Because nerves are famously tricky for the body to repair even with help, benefits may take longer than six months to appear. Side effects in the trial included fatigue from clemastine and diarrhea from metformin, so there are drawbacks too.

    Good news for those affected by psoriasis

    Ok, so this one’s arguably perhaps not as life-changing as the other two, but we’re continuing the good news streak here, and let’s face it, psoriasis isn’t fun and doesn’t tend to enrich life, so if its symptoms can be reduced by 75%, so much the better!

    We’ll keep this one short: the Mediterranean diet is great for many things, and this is one more. In this study, 47.4% on the Mediterranean diet achieved 75% symptom reduction, versus 0% in the control group, with benefits independent of weight loss. So this one’s quite clear indeed.

    How it works: the improvements are attributed to the diet’s anti-inflammatory and cardiometabolic properties, which we’ve written about before at 10almonds.

    So, this one’s not surprising, but it certainly is good news:
