It’s not always a perfect harmony, but what’s actually going on in there?
We can rebuild you; we have the technology
Implants are great! But they have their limitations. For example, insulin pumps and glucose sensors help people with diabetes monitor blood sugar and deliver insulin, but they require regular replacement, as do many other implants, including cosmetic implants and artificial knee joints.
Sometimes, a bit of a battle is fought:
- The initial “foreign body” response: the immune system recognizes an implant as a foreign object and triggers an inflammatory response, with proteins, antibodies, neutrophils, and macrophages attempting to attack or break down the material.
- Scar tissue formation: when immune cells cannot remove an implant, macrophages can fuse into giant cells, while fibroblasts deposit dense connective tissue that gradually forms a scar around the device, potentially blocking essential interactions with surrounding tissues.
- Potential complications: scar tissue can interfere with pacemakers’ electrical transmission, while particles released by worn artificial joints can trigger inflammation, and immune reactions to implants can sometimes become life-threatening.
As you might expect, researchers are always hard and work developing chemical and drug coatings that dampen immune responses, using natural materials and tissue-mimicking structures, and designing regenerative implants that release specific signals to guide the body’s immune reactions.
In essence, one of the main goals of this research is to develop implants that work with the body’s immune system, rather than being fought by it!
