Well, one exercise aside from walking! Can you guess what it is and how it helps?
Most people don’t think about this
Your calf muscles provide much of your forward propulsion when you walk, but they can weaken rapidly with age, making walking slower and more effortful.
But there’s something better than normal calf raises, for this forward calf lean exercise:
- Set up: stand a couple of steps away from a wall, place your hands against it for support, and lean your body forwards while keeping your feet flat; ideally you should feel a slight stretch but nothing that feels difficult in this position.
- Move: push your body up and forwards by contracting your calves, then slowly lower back down. Keep your body leaning forwards throughout the movement. Allow your ankles to bend further at the bottom, creating a deeper calf stretch, then fully contract your calves at the top.
- Progress: continue until your calves become tired, and practice the exercise regularly throughout the day. As ever with these sorts of exercises, consistency is the most important thing.
