Our wrists can often be the limiting factor to a lot of other exercises, not to mention that they can be a liability if our strength fails us (see also: many varieties of accidents involving dropped things in the kitchen). So, here’s how to avoid that:

Keep this list handy

Here’s the 5-minute routine:

  1. Start with fist-to-star hand pulses to warm up the forearms.
  2. In the “tabletop” position, draw shoulder circles over your wrists in both directions.
  3. With your hands flat, rotate your elbow to face forwards and backwards.
  4. Turn your fingertips out, sway side to side transferring your weight across your fingers.
  5. Turn your fingertips in; shift your weight forwards/backwards and then side to side to deepen the wrist stretch.
  6. Flip your palms up (backs of hands on mat), make small fists and expand your fingers with straight elbows.
  7. Sit back on your heels, clasp your hands, and roll your wrists in both directions.
  8. With your fingertips toward your knees, rock your hips backwards to stretch your wrists, keeping your elbows straight.
  9. With your palms still flipped, rotate your elbows again, focusing on the movement in your forearms.
  10. From the tabletop position again, lift your palms while keepingyour knuckles and fingertips grounded, then lower slowly.
  11. Lift up onto your fingertips without shifting your body weight, then lower; you can move your knees backwards to increase the difficulty.
  12. Shake out your wrists and forearms at the end.
