Will Harlow, the over-50s specialist physio, reports on what he sees works:

Stronger day by day

We’ll get straight into it; the habits are:

  1. Train with intensity, not volume: prioritize challenging strength training over doing more total exercise, stopping each set when you feel sincerely like you could do only about two more repetitions, and focusing on steady progress rather than extra workouts.
  2. Manage your afternoon energy: if you regularly experience an afternoon energy slump, experiment with replacing a carb-heavy lunch with a high-protein vegetable-heavy lunch for a week, to see whether your energy becomes more stable.
  3. Address your sticky areas: spend about 5 minutes each morning mobilizing any stiff or troublesome joints before discomfort develops, using movements specific to your knees, hips, shoulders, or other problem areas.
  4. Watch your language: avoid telling yourself that you’re too old to do something, and challenge age-related assumptions of the sort that can unnecessarily limit your confidence and activity.
  5. Have a “bad day” plan: decide in advance on a minimum amount of physical activity you can always complete, helping you maintain momentum and avoid breaking your exercise routine.
